EHS Beats South Central, Area Baseball Roundup

KINMUNDY -- Effingham High School edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead then tacked on a single run in the second. South Central came back to tie the score in the fifth with three runs.

The Hearts then broke the baseball game wide open with a seven-run sixth for a 10-3 win over the host Cougars.

Bateman had two singles and two doubles for the Hearts while Hall had a single, home run and three RBI, Beals a home run and two RBI and Ballman a home run and two RBI.

South Central was led by Markley with two singles.

Sandifer was the winning pitcher on a no-hitter with no walks over one inning. Hall started the contest going 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, no walks and striking out one.

The Hearts improve to 16-1 on the season.

At Kinmundy

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis started off the contest with a five-run first and defeated Mattoon 10-3.

The Wooden Shoes had 12 hits in the contest led by Kremer with two singles, a double and three RBI, Belleville with a double, home run and four RBI, Hartke with two singles and Bloemer with a double.

Belleville was the winning pitcher, going five innings, allowing six hits, one run, one walk and striking out three. Belleville improved to 4-0.

At Robinson

Newton took a 4-2 first inning lead and that stood until the fourth when the Eagles tallied two more and then finished out with three in the sixth for a 9-4 Little Illini Conference win over Robinson Thursday.

John Grunloh went six innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Grunloh also led offensively with a single, two doubles and three RBI. Mitch Bierman added two singles, a triple and an RBI.

Newton improves to 6-1 in the Little Illini Conference, 10-6 overall.

At Broadlands

Cumberland fell to Villa Grove/Heritage in Little Okaw Valley Conference action Thursday, 4-3.

The Pirates held a 1-0 lead in the second inning but VGH came back with two in the fourth. Cumberland moved ahead with two in the top of the seventh 3-2 but VGH tallied two in the bottom of the frame for the win.

Grissom had a home run and two RBI for Cumberland. R. Brown had a double and  Mathenia two singles.
