St. A Wins Over Salem, Area Baseball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony stepped out to a 3-1 opening inning lead on Salem and went on for an 8-4 victory over the Wildcats in baseball action Monday.

Salem took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a leadoff single by Boles, another single by Roth and an error.

But the Bulldogs came right back in the bottom of the inning when Drew Gibson singled with two outs. Greg Utz drew a walk and Joseph Kabbes followed with a three-run home run.

St. Anthony tacked on two more in the second on a single by Jacob Guy, a walk, sacrifice and passed ball.

That lead stood until the fifth when Salem scored three more runs to pull within 5-4. But, once again, St. Anthony answered in the bottom of the inning with two more runs. Brandon Puckett drew a walk and Gibson followed with a double. Utz singled and Kabbes walked.

St. Anthony scored a final run in the sixth on a single by Bryar Jansen and a single by Gibson.

Gibson finished with two singles, a double and two RBI while Kabbes had a home run and three RBI and Guy two singles.

Puckett picked up the pitching win, going five innings, allowing six hits, four runs, three walks and striking out seven.

St. Anthony also picked up the junior varsity victory, 8-1.

Charleston stepped out to a 3-1 first inning lead and never looked back in a 15-2 win in six innings over Dieterich Monday.

The Trojans banged out 15 hits in the contest and were aided by five Dieterich errors.

Dieterich had five hits led by Goedde with a single, double and an RBI and C. Thoele with a single, double and an RBI.

Robinson blanked Cumberland, 4-0 in action Monday.

Robinson tallied three in the sixth then tacked on a final run in the seventh.

Cumberland outhit the Maroons 5-3. Cutts had a double while Brown had two singles. Flier added a double.
