Teutopolis, Effingham Meet for Senior Legion Title

Effingham Post 120 and Teutopolis Post 924 will square off for the championship of the Senior Legion Baseball Tournament.
In action over the weekend, Robinson blanked Mount Vernon 2-0 in the opening contest followed by Effingham beating Newton 8-6 and Teutopolis bouncing Robinson 10-0.
Teutopolis then downed Effingham 11-7.
In the consolation bracket, Mount Vernon beat Newton 2-0. Mount Vernon then won over Robinson 15-3. Effingham moved into the championship game with a 6-5 win over Mount Vernon.
In Effingham's opening contest, Reed Schafer came up big leading Post 120 to an 8-6 win over Newton Post 20 Saturday. Schafer racked up three RBI on two hits. He singled in the fifth and doubled in the seventh.
Newton Post 20 had no answer for Schafer, who kept runners off the base paths in his appearance on the mound. Newton managed just one hit off the pitcher who allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out one during his 2 1/2 innings.
Newton took a 2-0 first inning lead but Effingham quickly tied in the second and moved ahead 6-3 in the fifth. Newton came back to knot the score in the top of the seventh before Effingham tallied two in the bottom of the frame.
In the second game, Teutopolis Post 924 downed Effingham 11-7. Teutopolis stepped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and was never headed.
T-town banged out 15 hits in the contest led by Devin Smith, with two singles, a double and an RBI, Carson Hartke with three singles and an RBI, Jacob Roepke with two singles and two RBI, John Kreke with two singles and an RBI and Brant Bueker with two singles and an RBI. Brock Bueker and Cody Jansen added a double each. Jansen had an RBI.
In the final contest, Effingham fought back from the loser bracket to beat Mount Vernon 6-5. Effingham trailed by one in the ninth inning.
Lane Koenig came to the plate and singled, scoring Bryar Jansen, who finished with a single, two doubles and an RBI and Blake White who had two singles and an RBI. Koenig racked up three RBI on two singles. Kyle Bourgeois also had two singles. Koenig got it done on the mound. He tossed seven innings of shutout ball with six strikouts, no walks and five hits.
Effingham and T-town will square off at 6 p.m. Tuesday for the tourney championship. If Effingham wins the first game, there will be a second game Wednesday at 6 p.m.
