Effingham High School graduate Chad Green will be back in the Major Leagues pitching Sunday. Chad's father, Howard, confirmed that Chad will start against San Diego Sunday afternoon.
Green was called up in May for his Major League debut against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had posted a 1.22 ERA over seven starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre but had a rough go in his debut. Arizona's All-Star Paul Goldschmidt slammed a home run on the first pitch in the first inning. Green later gave up another home run, this one of the three-run type, to Jake Lamb before exiting the game in the fifth. He gave up six runs on eight hits.
The Yankees gave Green little help as D'backs lefty Robbie Ray kept them under control allowing only six hits in the 12-2 victory.
Green went back down to Triple-A where he's been dominant again and made the All-Star team at that level. He's coming off back-to-back scoreless starts.
The Yankees announced Green will start Sunday against the Padres pushing CC Sabathia back to a Monday start against the Chicago White Sox. Green has been pitching extremely well at the Triple-A level and the Yankees are giving Green another opportunity to make the roster in the big leagues. He leads the International League with a 1.54 ERA in 81.2 innings and is second in the league with a 0.98 WHIP and seventh with 82 strikeouts. He has walked just 18 batters.
The Yankees don't want Sabathia playing against San Diego since he would have to hit and run and the team doesn't want him becoming injured.
