Effingham Senior Legion Splits DH With Newton

Effingham Post 120 and Newton Post 20 split a Senior Legion baseball doubleheader Monday.

Blake White went three-for-three at the plate in the opener as Effingham posted a 7-3 victory over Newton at Paul Smith Field. White had three singles and an RBI.

Lane Koenig had nine strikeouts, allowed six runs and walked three in five innings for the win.

Newton took a 3-2 first inning lead. The two teams went scoreless over the next three innings before Effingham broke free with four runs in the fifth. Kyle Bourgeois had a three-run double in the frame. Michael Woltman, Brandon Puckett and Koenig had two hits each while Zach Bateman had a double.

Newton was led by Nate Meinhart and Tim Weber with a double each. Weber had an RBI.

In the second contest, Newton Post 20 claimed a 6-4 victory. Cole Horner recorded the win for Newton allowing two runs over 4 2/3 innings. Horner struck out two.

Newton was sparked by John Grunloh who had a single, triple and two RBI. Matt Goedde and Nate Meinhart had two singles each and Goedde had an RBI.

Effingham edged out to a 2-1 first inning lead but Newton came back with two runs in the second, two in the fifth and finished out with one in the seventh.

Effingham was led by Bourgeois with a single, double and two RBI and Koenig with a double and an RBI.
