Effingham Post 120 Splits DH With Newton Post 20

NEWTON -- Bryar Jansen did all he could to give Effingham Legion Post 120 a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Newton Post 20 as Effingham lost 6-5 in seven innings at Newton Boys and Girls Park Monday.

It was a good day at the plate for Jansen who went two for five, drove in one and scored one run. He doubled in the fourth and singled in the seventh.

Tim Weber got the win in relief for Newton Post 20, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing one run.

Effingham took a 2-0 first inning lead and led 4-1 after six innings and added a run in the top of the seventh. However, Newton scored on an RBI single by Mitch Bierman, a three-run triple by Joe Stone and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning to score five runs and pull out the 6-5 win.

In the second contest, Effingham took home a 7-2 victory. Kyle Bourgeois and Zach Bateman led the Effingham hitting attack. Bateman had a single, double and drove in two runs while Kyle Bourgeois had a single and double. Also with two singles were Reed Schafer and Colby Utz.

Hudson Graham struck out 14, paving the way for the win. Graham allowed no earned runs on four hits and four walks over seven innings.

The lead stayed with Effingham after the first inning when Post 120 stepped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring on a two-run double by Bateman and a sacrifice fly by Graham.

Newton tallied in the bottom of the third and then pulled within 3-2 in the fourth.

Effingham increased its lead with three runs in the sixth. Post 120 now sports a 5-1 record.
