Eight hits in two days have made Matt Carpenter a happy man. Carpenter tied his season high with four hits for the second straight game, scored four times and drove in two runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 10-3 on Tuesday night.
"When you feel good, you feel good," Carpenter said after his 13th multihit game this season. "Hits come in bunches. I've had stretches during this year where I felt really good, was hitting balls right at people. Baseball has a funny way of working itself out."
Carpenter is 8 for 10 with seven runs, three doubles and two triples during this three-game series which ends Wednesday.
"It's pretty clear he's locked-in," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "He's tough to pitch to when he's like that."
Jedd Gyorko hit a three-run homer, and Mike Leake (4-4) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four over six innings for his fourth win in the last five starts. His only mistakes were Jonathan Lucroy's home run leading off the second and Ryan Braun's RBI double in the sixth.
Carpenter and Matt Holliday -- 2 for 4 with two RBI -- continued their torrid hitting against the Brewers, this time against Wily Peralta (3-6).
In the Cardinals' 6-0 win on Monday, Carpenter had four hits and three runs and Holliday added his second consecutive three-hit game, including his second home run of the nine-game road trip.
Tuesday night, Carpenter doubled, singled and tripled twice. Holliday singled twice, driving in Carpenter both times. Carpenter also scored when Holliday hit into a double play in the seventh. Carpenter scored again when Aledmys Diaz grounded out to third during a five-run eighth.
Dodgers 5, Cubs 0
The Los Angeles Dodgers found a way to win when facing Jake Arrieta: throw a one-hitter.
Scott Kazmir and two relievers combined to allow only a third-inning single, matching zeros with the Cubs ace before the Dodgers got to Chicago's bullpen for a 5-0 victory Tuesday night.
Kazmir allowed the lone hit and a walk with seven strikeouts in six innings. Joe Blanton (3-2) struck out three in two perfect innings before Adam Liberatore struck out one in a perfect ninth as the Dodgers snapped the Cubs' six-game winning streak.
Cubs left-hander Clayton Richard (0-1) gave up three straight singles to lefties in the eighth, the last Adrian Gonzalez's liner to left that scored Chase Utley and ended the Dodgers' 16-inning scoreless streak.
Corey Seager hit a three-run homer off Trevor Cahill in the ninth in the Dodgers' seventh win in nine games.
Arrieta walked the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh before striking out Justin Turner looking on his 107th pitch.
Arrieta allowed two hits and four walks and struck out eight while lowering his ERA to 1.56, but couldn't become the majors' first 10-game winner.
White Sox 6, Mets 4
After tumbling into a long losing streak by coughing up late leads, the Chicago White Sox ended it by coming from behind.
Tyler Saladino hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning and Chicago rallied from an early four-run deficit, stopping a seven-game slide Tuesday night with a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets.
Todd Frazier's two-run drive was his 16th homer this season, and the White Sox got four innings of scoreless relief from their beleaguered bullpen to win for only the fifth time in 20 games.
"You're down 4-0, I think a lesser group rolls over and just gives up, and they won't do that," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said.
Neil Walker hit a two-run homer for the Mets, who led 4-0 after three innings. But rookie Steven Matz, trying to win his eighth consecutive start, suddenly faded in the sixth and gave up three quick runs.
Melky Cabrera drew a leadoff walk in the eighth from Hansel Robles (0-3). One out later, Saladino sent a 2-2 fastball to left field for his third home run, putting Chicago in front 5-4.
"To put the boys ahead, that's everything," Saladino said.
Brett Lawrie, moved up to the No. 2 slot in the batting order, added an RBI single off Logan Verrett with two outs.
