KINMUNDY -- Neoga and South Central claimed victories in the Class 1A South Central Baseball Regional Wednesday and will now meet for the championship Saturday at 11 a.m.

Neoga got started in the second inning and went on to beat Mulberry Grove 7-1.

The Indians had seven hits in the contest led by Caleb Hill with a double and two RBI and Lee Nees with a single, double and one RBI.

Neoga improves to 17-10 on the season.

In the second contest, South Central stepped out to an early 3-0 lead and went on to beat Dieterich 8-5.

The Cougars had 12 hits in the contest and were aided by seven Dieterich errors.

Matheny had a double, home run and two RBI for the winners while Harmeier added two singles and a double. Harpster had a single and double.

Dieterich had five hits in the contest, all singles. McClain drove in a run as did Poe.

Geiler pitched a five-hitter with four walks and 14 strikeouts.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Altamont bounced Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick 13-0 in five innings via the 10-run rule.

The Indians stepped out to an 8-0 first inning lead then tallied two runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.

N. Miller pitched a one-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Altamont had 11 hits led by Hosick with two singles, a doublel and two  RBI while C. Miller had two singles and Biggs added a double and an RBI.

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton moved into the championship game of its own regional with a 10-2 win over Breese Mater Dei.

Mater Dei took a 2-0 lead in the second and held it until the fourth when the Eagles tied in the fourth then moved ahead with a run in the fifth. Newton had a five-run sixth and two in the seventh.

Mitch Jansen picked up the pitching win on a three-hitter with two strikeouts.

John Grunloh had three doubles and two RBI while Nate Meinhart had a single, homeem run and three RBI. Mitch Bierman had a single, home run and one RBI. Beau Prater also hit a home run and had two RBI.

Newton improves to 17-9 and will now face Carlyle at 10 a.m. for the championship. Carlyle blanked Flora in the second game 3-0.

Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Regional

Bethany Okaw Valley bounced Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 15-0 Wednesday.

Bethany Okaw Valley will face eihehr Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg or Decatur St. Teresa Saturday for the regional championship.

Windsor/Stew-Stras and St. Teresa meet today at 4:30 p.m.

 

Regular Season

Effingham fell to Salem in an Apollo Conference doubleheader Wednesday.

In the opening game, the Wildcats took a 3-0 second inning lead and claimed a 6-1 win. Salem had seven hits while Effingham had five and committed three errors.

Lane Koenig hit a home run for the Hearts. Brant Beals and Zac Bateman had a double each.

In the second contest, Salem had to go eight innings before beating Effingham 3-1. The Hearts held a 1-0 lead until the top of the seventh when Salem tied the game.

The Wildcats then tallied two in the eighth.

Effingham had only two hits, singles by Brent Beals and Mason Hull.

EHS finishes the Apollo Conference season with a 5-5 record and tied for third place. The Hearts stand at 19-8 overall.
