Chase Anderson's task Tuesday night was to be better than the best, and he was up to the challenge.

Anderson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and finished with 8 2/3 strong innings to lift the Milwaukee Brewers over the Chicago Cubs 4-2 on Tuesday night.

The Cubs entered averaging 5.94 runs per game, but Anderson (2-5) stopped them almost cold to snap a personal five-game skid.

"Those guys are in first place," Anderson said. "They have a heck of a record."

The Cubs came in with a major-league leading 27-9 mark, but Anderson used near perfect execution to hold them down.

"When you execute pitches, I feel like you can get anybody out, no matter who it is," Anderson said. "You could put nine Ken Griffey Jr.'s out there, but if you execute pitches, it is hard to hit."

Ben Zobrist ended Anderson's no-hit bid with a double to the center field wall on the first pitch of the eighth.

Anderson was perfect through 5 1/3 innings before walking Miguel Montero on a 3-2 pitch. Then he regrouped by striking out Kyle Hendricks and Dexter Fowler.

Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant spoiled Anderson's shutout with solo homers in the ninth. Bryant drove Anderson's final pitch to the seats in left.

Rockies 3, Cardinals 1

Chad Bettis made his first appearance at Busch Stadium a memorable one. Bettis did not allow a hit until the fifth inning, took a shutout into the seventh and also drove in a run to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Nolan Arrenado and Dustin Garneau had RBI singles, and Bettis added a run-scoring grounder as the Rockies got their season-high fifth straight win and won for only the fifth time in 22 games at Busch Stadium since 2010.

Bettis (4-2) didn't give up a hit until Jeremy Hazelbaker beat out an infield single leading off the fifth. He allowed only two base runners in scoring position until tiring in the seventh, gave up five singles in 6 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out four.

"He was in control," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "An outstanding job. There were a lot of ground balls, a lot of poor swings."

Bettis worked at least six innings for the eighth consecutive start and got 11 outs on ground balls.

"Every start I go out to keep the ball down and have them roll over to our infielders," Bettis said. "We had some great plays. Everything went fantastic."

The Cardinals finally reached Bettis in the seventh when they scored on consecutive two-out singles by Almedys Diaz, Kolten Wong and pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk.

Astros 6, White Sox 5

Houston manager A.J. Hinch plans to shuffle his minor league call-ups in and out of the lineup to get his struggling Astros rolling on offense. The strategy paid immediate dividends.

Evan Gattis celebrated his return to the majors with a two-run homer in the 11th inning that lifted Houston over the Chicago White Sox 6-5 on Tuesday night.

Astros rookie Tyler White hit a pair of solo shots for his first multihomer game and capped a three-hit night with a double. Jason Castro and Jose Altuve each drove in a run for Houston.

"Gattis had the huge swing there," White said. "It was incredible."

Gattis, recalled from Double-A Corpus Christi earlier in the day and inserted as the designated hitter, lined an 0-2 pitch from reliever Matt Albers (1-3) into the left-field bullpen for his second homer this season.

"He was throwing a good sinker," Gattis said. "I missed one, then I fouled one off my calf or somewhere.

"I'm glad I got one I can handle. Glad I got the barrel on it. Glad I can help us win today."
