St. Anthony's Baseball Season Ends, EHS Cruises, Other Area Results

St. Anthony High School's baseball season came to an end Monday in its Class 2A St. Anthony Regional opener, falling to Vandalia by a 5-0 final.

Joe Kabbes managed St. Anthony's lone hit against Vandals pitcher Richie Well, a fifth-inning single. The Northsiders' only other baserunners came via bases on balls; Greg Utz drew two, while Ethan Greene and Brandon Puckett each walked once.

Puckett took the loss, allowing all five runs (four earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four without a walk before giving way to Greene, who finished the game on the mound. St. Anthony finishes the spring with a 14-12 record.

Effingham High School jumped all over Okay Valley with a six-run first inning and prevailed by a 12-1 final in five innings.

In that eventful top of the first inning, EHS got an RBI base hit from Lane Koenig, an RBI double from Mason Hull, a bases-loaded walk from Reed Schafer, and then a bases-clearing three-run double from Zac Bateman. Koenig ended up 4-for-4 at the plate, while Bateman was 3-for-3 with five runs driven in.

Brent Beals tossed the first three innings, picking up the pitching victory.

At Bethany

Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick advanced in the Class 1A Altamont Regional, riding a 16-strikeout game from Austin Rexroad to a 3-2 victory over Ramsey.

Rexroad also had an RBI single in the game; at 407 career strikeouts, he sits one shy of the school record. BCCH fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but tied it in the home half of the frame and went ahead for good in the third. The Eagles advance to face Altamont Wednesday in semifinal competition.

Altamont closed its regular season at Central A&M by a 1-0 final. The contest was scoreless until A&M notched the game's lone run in the home half of the fifth.

Altamont faces Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick Wednesday in regional semifinal competition.

Teutopolis worked in one more regular season game Monday, traveling to Paris and thumping the Tigers 14-2.

The final score is a bit misleading; the Wooden Shoes scored 10 times in the top of the seventh and final frame and didn't lead until the fifth. Paris took an early 2-0 lead, but T-town knotted it up in the fourth before going up for good in the following frame.

Collin Funneman, working 4 1/3 innings in relief, was the winning pitcher. T-town improves to 22-9 and will face Vandalia Wednesday at 4 p.m. in a semifinal at the Class 2A St. Anthony Regional.

In its final regular season game of the spring, Brownstown/St. Elmo took a 2-0 loss to visiting Webber Township.

Webber scored both its runs in the top of the third inning and limited BSE to just three hits on the afternoon. Next up for BSE (14-13) is a Thursday matchup with North Clay at the Class 1A Altamont Regional; game time is 4:15 p.m.

Windsor/Stew-Stras closed out its regular season with a 7-3 home loss to the Salt Fork Storm.

The Storm broke open a 2-2 game with five tallies in the top of the fifth. Christian Kessler and Isaac Kramer notched the only two base hits for the Hatchets, who return to action Thursday in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal against the host school at the Class 1A Decatur St. Teresa Regional.

Newton cruised to victory in its own Class 2A regional, defeating Lawrenceville 8-2.

The Eagles are back in action Wednesday, facing Breese Mater Dei in a 4 p.m. semifinal.
