Effingham High School graduate Chad Green is being called up to the majors by the New York Yankees.
The Yankees are calling up Green from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take reliever Luis Severino's spot on the roster, and officially purchased Green's contract Saturday morning.
Severino struggled mightily in a 7-1 loss to the White Sox, surrendering seven runs and seven hits with four walks before leaving the field with head athletic trainer Steve Donahue. An MRI taken during the game revealed the strain. Severino is being placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Green went to the University of Louisville after graduating from EHS. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers, and then was traded to the Yankees after last season.
Green was invited to spring training by the Yankees as a non-roster player. He began the season at Tampa before being called up to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In seven starts for the RailRiders, Green had gone 2-3 but had a glittering 1.22 ERA. In 37 innings, he had allowed just five earned runs on 29 hits. He had fanned 36 batters while walking just 12, holding hitters to a .215 average and posting a WHIP of 1.11.
According to Pinstripe Alley, the SB Nation blog devoted to Yankees coverage, it’s not certain how New York plans to use Green on its roster. He could continue starting, which he’s done all year in the International League, or the team might use him out of the bullpen with CC Sabathia due to return soon from his own DL stint.
Chad is married to the former Jenna Daugherty. He is the son of Howard and Sheena Green of Effingham. He and twin brother Chase will turn 25 on May 24.
