EIU Wins Rain-Shortened Baseball Game

CHARLESTON, Ill. – In a game shortened due to incoming weather in the Charleston, Ill. area, it was Eastern Illinois who was ahead of Millikin 4-1 when the umpires and coaches decided to call the game after seven innings. The Panthers will look to continue their three-game winning streak as they head to Martin, Tenn. for a three-game OVC series this weekend against UT Martin.

With the win, Eastern Illinois improves to 10-37 overall. Millikin finishes their season with a 16-23 record.

After a scoreless first inning for both team, it was Eastern Illinois who jumped out front in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on first and second, Tyler Tesmond produced the first run of the game with an RBI single to left. Hunter Morris followed the Tesmond hit with an RBI single of his own to right. Dane Toppel continued the scoring ways with an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Panthers their third run of the inning. After Morris moved up into scoring position stealing second base, Joseph Duncan drove him in with an RBI double into the left-center gap to give EIU a 4-0 lead.

The score remained at 4-0 until Millikin scored a run in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-1.

After both teams were held scoreless in the seventh inning, the umpires and coaches were called to home plate. With lightning close by and rain on the way, the game was called and the Panthers picked up the 4-1 win.

Michael McCormick picked up the win for the Panthers. McCormick scattered three hits in five scoreless innings.
Mitch Gasbarro, Frankie Perrone, Duncan, Tesmond, and Morris all collected one hit each for the Panthers.
