EHS Sweeps DH With Mattoon, Baseball Roundup

Effingham High School claimed a baseball doubleheader Saturday against Mattoon.
The Hearts won the opener 4-1. Michael Woltman went three-for-three at the plate, sparking the victory. He singled in the second, fourth and sixth innings.
Mattoon couldn't get anything going so long as Lane Koenig was on the hill. Koenig gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out four during his 3 2/3 innings of work.
Brent Beals got it done on the bump on the way to a win. He allowed one run over 3 1/2 innings, striking out two and allowing four runs.
In the top of the first, Effingham grabbed the early lead 1-0 which began on a single by Beals. Mattoon came right back to knot the score in the bottom of the frame.
Effingham didn't relinquish the lead after scoring three runs in the second on an error and two singles.
After five lead changes, Effingham pulled out a 6-5 win over Mattoon. The Hearts took the lead in the seventh and held on for the victory. An error scored Beals and gave the Hearts the lead for good.
Woltman led EHS' offensive threat as he reached base three times with singles in the first and seventh innings. Utz got the win in relief going one inning.
Effingham took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Brett Koester had a double and a single by Woltman moved Koester from second to third. Woltman scored on an RBI single by Hudson Grhaam.
EHS scored a single run in the third but Mattoon tied in the bottom of the frame then took a 5-3 lead in the fourth. EHS then came through with the three-run seventh.

At Beecher City
Brownstown/St. Elmo picked up two victories in the Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick Round Robin Baseball Tournament Saturday.
Brownstown/St. Elmo beat Wayne City 7-2 by scoring two in the first, three in the fourth and two in the sixth.
BSE banged out 10 hits in the contest led by Landon Feezel with two doubles and two RBI, Nate Philpot with two doubles and one RBI, Dalton Denton with a double and an RBI and Isaac Maxey and Cole Horner with two singles each.
In the second contest, BSE defeated BCCH 13-3 in five innings. BSE broke open a close game with a six-run second. Lewis Brown had a single, double and three RBI while Denton had two doubles and two RBI.
BCCH was led by Rexroad with two singles and an RBI.
BCCH defeated Wayne City 8-4. BCCH took a 4-2 lead after three inning then tallied a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Rexroad had a single double and two RBI while Kirchhofer had two singles and an RBI.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg captured two victories during Saturday action.
In the opening game, WSS pounded Robinson 15-5 in five innings.
Nic Hutchinson picked up the pitching win going all five innings, allowing four hits, four walks and striking out 10.
Chase Thies had a single, triple and two RBI for the Hatchets while Christian Kessler had a triple and two RBI, Huchinson two singles and an RBI, Isaac Kramer a single, home run and four RBI, Josh Overbeck a triple and two RBI and Dalton Armes a double and an RBI.
In the second game, Robinson downed Cerro Gordo 10-4.
In the third contest, Kramer threw a three-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Kessler had a single, double and two RBI while Hutchinson had a triple, Derek Moshenrose with two singles and an RBI and Collin Ohnesorge with a home run and two RBI.
