Effingham High School split baseball victories with Charleston in Apollo Conference action Saturday.

The Trojans won the opener 3-1. The game was scoreless until Charleston broke the ice with one run in the fifth. Charleston scored on an RBI single by Carver.

Effingham's lone run of the ballgame came in the fifth when Mason Hull was hit by a pitch.

The Trojans came back to take the lead in the top of the seventh with two runs on a sacrifice by Armstrong and an RBI single by Gubbins.

In the second game,  Brent Beals powered Effingham at the plate and on the rubber as the Hearts edged Charleston 5-4.

Beals got a hit in each of his three at-bats. He singled in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Beals worked out of seven tricky spots for the Hearts. He pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed no earned runs on no hits. Beals faced his trickiest spot in the seventh.

The teams traded runs for most of the contest and had five lead changes in the game. EHS moved ahead in the seventh and held on for the victory. Brett Koester hit an RBI double bringing home Michael Woltman for the go-ahead run.

The Effingham junior varsity split games. EHS won 11-9 before Charleston won 7-4.

The Hearts are now 1-1 in the conference, 7-3 overall.

At Tuscola

Effingham St. Anthony picked up two victories in the Tuscola Invitational Saturday.

The Bulldogs beat host Tuscola 11-6 behind some heavy-duty hitting. Drew Gibson had a single, home run and an RBI while Greg Utz had a single, double and an RBI and Adam Levitt a home run and six RBI.

The Bulldogs held a 4-2 lead until the fifth then the score was tied at 5-5. St. Anthony pushed ahead with two runs in the sixth and finished out with a four-run seventh.

In the second contest, St. Anthony edged Salt Fork 2-1. The Bulldogs scored their two innings in the first then held off a challenge by Salt Fork.

Utz had a double andn drove in a run. Brandon Puckett was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter with three walks and eight strikouts.

At Vandalia

Brownstown/St. Elmo competed in the Vandalia Round Robin Tournament Saturday and fell in two games.

BSE lost to Vandalia in the opener 3-1. Vandalia tallied a run in the first and BSE tied in the top of the sixth. But the Vandals came back in the bottom of the sixth to score two runs for the win.

Nate Philpot had two singles and an RBI for BSE.

In the second game, Okawville was a 7-1 winner. The two teams were scored at 1-1 in the first before Okawville tallied two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Lewis Brown had a double for BSE. Brownstown/St. Elmo drops to 4-9 on the season.

At Neoga

Neoga blanked Tri-County 11-0 in five innings via the 10-run rule Saturday.

The Indians edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead then had a six-run third and a three-run fourth.

Guy Walk picked up the pitching win, going three innings, not allowing a hit while striking out six.

Drew Ramert had a single, double and drove in two runs for the winners. Walk added a single, double and an RBI. Jimmy Wood had two singles, a double and an RBi and Trevor Easton two singles and two RBI.

In the second game, Neoga bounced Tri-County 14-4 in five innings. The Indians held a 4-2 first inning lead then led 8-4 after two. Neoga had a five-run third and scored a single run in the fourth to end the contest.

Matt Kingery had a single and a three-run homer. He finished with four RBI. Caleb Hill had a single, double and a grand slam with five RBI.

The Indians are now 8-5 on the season.

At Benton

South Central split victories in the Benton Tournament Saturday.

The Cougars lost the opener to Benton 10-0. Benton stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back. South Central had only two hits in the contest and committed three errors.

South Central then came back to reverse matters and scored a 10-0 win over Johnston City.

The Cougars were the ones to take a 3-0 first inning lead. Gavin Ratermann pitched a no-hitter with two strikeouts. Ryan Matheny had two doubles while Ratermann had a double and an RBI and Ryan McCown had two singles and an RBI.
