Mattoon Edges St. A, Neoga, T-town, Altamont Nab Baseball Wins

MATTOON -- Effingham St. Anthony and Mattoon went toe-to-toe the whole baseball game before the Green Wave pulled out a 1-0 victory in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday.

The Bulldogs' Adam Levitt kept the Green Wave off the scoreboard with a pitching gem. He went 7 2/3 innings, giving up only the one run on six hits while striking out three and walking only two.

Both teams left numerous runners on base. The Bulldogs had runners in scoring position in six of the eight ininngs and stranded nine.

But the Green Wave scored the winning run with two outs. The bases were loaded when Garrette Branson hit a grounder that deflected off Levitt's glove allowing him to reach first base safely and Colton Shoot scored for the win.

Mattoon improves to 6-3 on the season while St. Anthony drops to 4-6.

Levitt aided his own cause with a single and double while Ethan Greene added two singles.

 At Charleston

Charleston held an 8-4 lead until the sixth inning when Neoga put it altogether to pull out a 9-8 victory.

The Indians tied the game when Matt Kingery led off the frame with a single. Drew Ramert was hit by a pitch followed by Caleb Hill who bounced a ball over the fence for a double scoring Kingery. Guy Walk then singled scoring Ramert. With one out, Justin Yurs hit a double and Hill came home.  Lee Nees then came to the plate and singled, scoring the tying and winning runs.

Hill finished with a single, double, home run and two RBI for the Indians. Yurs had a single, double and an RBI while Neese had a single, double and two RBI. Walk had two singles and an RBI.

Trevor Easton went three up and three down in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for his second pitching win of the season. Neoga is now 6-5 and will play at Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick Thursday.

 At Oblong

This game was close from the get-go. Oblong moved ahead in the first 2-1 but Dieterich came back to lead 3-2 in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, Oblong tied the score.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Oblong scored the winning run to take a 4-3 victory.

Both teams had four hits in the contest. Dieterich was led by Goedde with a single and triple while Poe added a double and an RBI.

Teutopolis took a 6-0 first inning lead and never looked back in a 15-2 win over Olney in six innings.

Lane Belleville picked up the pitching win on a six-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Kyle Smith connected on a single, a home run and drove in two runs while Brant Bueker had two singles and an RBI, Devin Smith three singles and four RBI and Tyler Westendorf a double and two RBI.

The Shoes are now 8-5 on the season while Olney drops to 5-3. T-town will travel to Highland Thursday.

Altamont came calling and picked up an 8-1 victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo Tuesday.

BSE held a 1-0 lead until the third when Altamont tied the score. The Indians pushed ahead with a run in the fifth and finished off the contest with a four-run seventh.

Nick Miller had a single, two triples and an RBI for the winners while Branden Hosick added a triple and two RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Lewis Brown with two doubles, Wade Ireland with two singles and Cole Horner with a double.

Newton edged North Clay (Louisville), 3-1 in action Tuesday.

The Eagles held a 1-0 first inning lead. North Clay tied in the fifth but Newton came back with two in the bottom of the sixth for the win.

Meinhart had a double for the winners while Mammoser had two singles. The Eagles improve to 2-4 and is back in action Thursday at Casey-Westfield. North Clay was led by Repking with three singles.
