Effingham's Blake White takes a Brock Bueker pitch the opposite way for a base hit to drive in the first Hearts run Monday.
Effingham High School Coach Chris Fleener steered his team to a 7-3 win over brother Justin Fleener's Teutopolis baseball squad Monday evening.
It was a typical EHS/T-town confrontation as the two were tied at 2-2 after three innings. The Wooden Shoes jumped ahead first when Tyler Bloemer led off the frame with a single. Devin Smith then reached base on a fielder's choice and took second on an error by the Shoes. Dylan Bloemer then drew a walk against pitcher Lane Koenig before Austin Johnson singled and the bases were loaded. John Kreke slammed out a single that scored both runs.
Effingham came back in the bottom of the inning when Eli Buhrman led off with a single and took second on a pickoff attempt that went past first base. Blake White followed with a single that scored Buhrman. Michael Woltman reached base on a dropped third strike before Koenig nailed a double and the score was tied at 2-2.
Effingham came back in the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead when Reed Schafer doubled home two runners. The Hearts sealed the victory with three more in the bottom of the sixth. Koenig nailed a hit to left field that produced two RBI. Schafer drew a walk that scored a run.
Koenig led the Hearts both defensively and offensively. Koenig led in hitting with a single, two doubles and two RBI and pitched the win, going six innings, allwoing six hits, two walks and striking out two.
Schafer had a single, double and three RBI. EHS improved to 5-2.
T-town had all singles from seven different players and a double from Brock Bueker. T-town dropped to 7-5.
A rematch between the two squads is set for May 2 in Teutopolis.
