Matt Holliday hit his first home run this spring, a long drive off Bartolo Colon that helped the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 3-1 Monday.

Holliday's shot hit the Marlins clubhouse beyond the left field wall. The Marlins and Cardinals share the complex.

Holliday later singled and scored in the fourth inning.

That was all the work the 12-year veteran needed for the day.

"Some of them need to go nine (innings) and some of them maybe not so much," manager Mike Matheny said. "He puts together a homer and another laser -- that's a good day to just get out."

Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez gave up one run and three hits in six innings. He walked none and struck out four.

Martinez finished his outing by throwing a fastball past Yoenis Cespedes.

"That's a good fastball hitter," Matheny said. "I thought it was just a great outing."

Colon allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.

Cubs 8, Angels 8

Jason Heyward homered for the second straight game and Anthony Rizzo also connected as the Chicago Cubs tied the Los Angeles Angels 8-8 at spring training on Monday.

Heyward's three-run shot homer off Nick Tropeano cleared the bullpen in right field in the third inning.

Mike Trout and Albert Pujols hit back-to-back homers in the Angels' five-run fourth against Kyle Hendricks. Pujols' fifth of the spring cleared the hedge behind the left-field berm.

Heyward, who went deep in Sunday's game in Mesa despite being hounded by a swarm of bees, was 1 for 3 on Monday.

The Cubs stopped a three-game losing streak while the Angels had their fifth tie in Cactus League action. The teams meet in the season opener April 4 in Anaheim.

Andrelton Simmons was 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles for the Angels. He also swiped home as part of a double steal in the fourth.

White Sox 11, Rockies 7

Charlie Blackmon, Trevor Story and Carlos Gonzalez hit consecutive home runs off John Danks before he settled down and the Chicago White Sox responded with four homers in an 11-7 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Monday.

Carlos Sanchez homered twice and drove in four and Jose Abreu and Matt Davidson each had three hits and a homer for the White Sox, who have an MLB-high 46 home runs this spring.

"It's fun to watch. It's great for us pitchers," Danks said. "These guys are catching the ball and putting up runs. It makes our job that much easier."

Danks entered with an 11-inning scoreless streak over two starts. The lefty gave up three hits to Blackmon but retired 12 of the final 13 batters in a six-inning stint.

Rockies starter Jordan Lyles was roughed up for seven runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
