Effingham played host to LaSalle-Peru in a doubleheader Saturday and split baseball victories.
In the opener, the Cavaliers won the game 5-4. LaSalle-Peru opened the first with a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Brady Huebbe and held at 3-0 lead in the top of the second.
EHS came back to knot the score in the bottom of the frame. But LaSalle-Peru pushed ahead in the fourth with two runs and held off a challenge by the Hearts.
In the second game, EHS took the last of 10 lead changes in a back-and-forth affair to win 8-7 in eight innings.
The Hearts went up for good on an RBI single by Zac Bateman, scoring Brett Koester.
Ryan Sandifer racked up four RBI on a single and two doubles. Koester shut down LaSalle-Peru while he was on the rubber with a one-hitter. He struck out six during his 2 2/3 innings of work. Mason Hull recorded the win by tossing one inning of shutout ball.
"Great day for baseball," said EHS Coach Chris Fleener. "I would like to thank our baseball parents who stepped up and provided meals for both teams, the parents and fans at the game. Between games, our parents raised $440 for the King family who just lost their house in a fire.
"I really think it is a special act of kindness when they could raise money to help out a family in need during this time of year. It is not all about us. When we help others like this it just shows what great people we have out there."
