MOUNT ZION -- Effingham St. Anthony High School opened its baseball season at Mount Zion Tuesday and fell to the Braves 5-0.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a single and two doubles. The Braves pushed that to 2-0 in the second as the leadoff batter reached base on an error, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and came home.

St. Anthony, meanwhile, had two runners on in the first inning but left them stranded. The Bulldogs had a single runner in the second, third and sixth innings and put three on in the final inning but couldn't dent the plate.

With one out in the seventh, Adam Levitt singled and Jacob Guy drew a walk. With two outs, Bryar Jansen singled to load the bases. But a strikeout ended the frame.

Jansen finished with two singles and a double for the Bulldogs. St. Anthony will be back in action Saturday hosting Breese Mater Dei in a doubleheader.
