T-town Wins State Junior High Baseball Title, ALIS Still In Hunt At Class S State Tourney

EAST PEORIA -- Teutopolis Junior High School claimed the Class 2A Boys State Baseball Tournament championship for the third straight year and fourth time in five years Saturday at Eastside Centre.
In the opening game Friday, T-town blasted St. Joseph 18-0. In the semifinal round Saturday, the Shoes won over Hoopeston Area 8-4.
T-town stepped out to an early 2-0 first inning lead then tacked on four runs in the second. Hoopeston pulled within 6-3 in the fourth but T-town tacked on two more in the fifth for the 8-4 win.
Mitch Hardiek had a single, home run and two RBI while Luke Ungrund had a single, double and an RBI and Matthew Deters two singles. Hardiek picked up the pitching win, going six innings, allowing four runs, five hits, five walks and striking out nine.
That moved T-town into the championship game against Joliet St. Raymond. The Shoes again took the early lead, 1-0 in the second, then added on four in the third and three in the fifth for an 8-0 win.
Mitch Hemmen allowed only one hit, no walks and struck out six in the pitching win.
Ungrund had two singles, a home run and two RBI while Hardiek had two singles and three RBI.

Class S State Tournament
Altamont Lutheran ran its record to 23-0 on the season as it continued its run at state, clipping St. Anne's/TSJ 4-3 Saturday in the opening round of the Class S State Tournament in the Southern Illinois Junior High Athletic Assocciation.
ALIS tallied a run in the third. St. Ann's/TSJ tied in the fifth. ALIS then tallied three runs in the top of the sixth. St. Ann's/TSJ came back with two in the bottom of the sixth but couldn't get over the hump.
Denver Duckwitz threw four shutout innings and Hunter Brandt finished up the game for the win.
In other games, St. Peter-Paul Catholic/Waterloo downed Carrier Mills 7-1, New Hope won over Ewing 3-0 and Steeleville defeated Egyptian 8-3.
Altamont Lutheran will play Tuesday, facing Steeleville at 3 p.m. while St. Peter-Paul Catholic will take on New Hope at 1 p.m. The winners advance to the state championship Thursday at 3 p.m. while the losers square off for third place at 1 p.m.
