Teutopolis Wins, St. Anthony Loses at State Tournament

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes advanced to the Final Four of the Class 2A State Junior High Baseball Tournament in East Peoria Friday, blanking St. Joseph, 18-0.

Meanwhile, the St. Anthony Bullpups saw their season end in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A State Tournament, falling to Normal Metcalf, 13-3.

Teutopolis posted an 11-run sixth inning, to go along with a three-run second inning and two-run innings in the third and fourth innings, pounding out 13 hits along the way.

As impressive as the hitting was the pitching. Luke Ungrund got the win, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five batters in five innings of work. Mitch Hardiek pitched the final inning and was perfect, striking out the side.

Teutopolis improved to 19-0 and will play at noon Saturday against Hoopeston Area at Eastside Centre in East Peoria. The winner will play for the state championship at 4:30pm, the loser will play third place at 2:30pm.

St. Anthony got off to a good start, scoring twice in the first inning, but Normal Metcalf scored in the bottom of the frame, and then took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the third inning. The Bullpups bounced back to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but then came a disastrous bottom of the fifth when Metcalf posted a nine-run inning. Metcalf added a final run in the sixth.

Gavin Braunecker took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits and five walks in four innings, striking out nine. Jack Hoene pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing six runs on four hits and four walks, striking out one. Davis Tingley pitched the final inning, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out one.
