MORTON -- Effingham Junior High School competed in the Morton Baseball Classic Friday and Saturday and captured third place.
In the opener Friday, the Mustangs fell to Morton 4-1. Effingham took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third but Morton came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Parker Siner had a double while Cameron Kalber had a single and the lone RBI in the contest. Austin Waldhoff pitched five innings and allowed only two baserunners on other than in the third inning.
In Saturday action, Pekin Broadmoor stepped out to a 9-1 first inning lead and never looked back in a 20-12 win. Effingham outhit Pekin 14-12 but committed five errors and went through six pitchers.
Kalber had three singles and a solo home run. He finished with two RBI. Tate Niebrugge added a single, double and drove in four runs. Dawson Whitten had two doubles and two RBI, Jack Matteson a double and an RBI, Siner two singles and two RBI and Christian Raddatz two singles.
In the third place game, Effingham trailed Pleasant Plains 3-0 until the fifth inning. The Mustangs rallied to tally three runs and tie the score. The game went into the eighth inning.
Effingham came up in the bottom of the frame and Whitten singled. Siner then came to bat and knocked out a single that scored Whitten for the game-winning run. Siner also picked up the pitching win, going five innings, allowing three runs, five hits, two walks and striking out seven.
Kalber had a double in the contest while Pemberton and Waldhoff had two singles each. The Mustangs are now 2-4 on the season.

At Windsor
Okaw Valley came calling and went away with a 16-5 win over Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor Saturday.
Okaw Valley leaped out to a 4-0 first inning lead and never looked back. Montgomery picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with six walks and nine strikeouts.
Howard and Austin Vonderheide had the lone two hits for Stew-Stras/Windsor.
