Jake Arrieta had no desire to tout his high win total or his place in the NL Cy Young Award race. All that mattered to him was the Cubs stopped their recent skid.
Arrieta pitched six scoreless innings for his major league-leading 15th win, and Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell homered to lead Chicago to a 7-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night.
The Cubs snapped a three-game losing streak after winning nine straight and 15 of 16, with Arrieta (15-6) dominating on the mound and Rizzo and Russell supplying the power at the plate.
White Sox 8, Angels 2
The Chicago White Sox have had trouble scoring runs in bunches. Against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night, they were finally able to get a big inning and avoided a four-game sweep.
Jose Abreu capped a five-run fifth with a two-run double, getting the benefit of a video replay reversal, and the White Sox ended a seven-game road losing streak with an 8-2 victory.
Jose Quintana (7-10) allowed two runs and eight hits over six innings and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third. The left-hander struck out three and walked two -- marking the 15th consecutive start in which he gave up fewer than three bases on balls.
