The San Francisco Giants got a rally-starting at-bat from an unusual source. The bad news: No doubt Madison Bumgarner might be picking up a bat more often whenever the team needs a little kick.

"Yeah, now we've got to hear it from him for a few days, saying how easy that was," manager Bruce Bochy said after Bumgarner's first career pinch-hit helped produce an insurance run in a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Ryan Vogelsong had it working on the mound after a slow start, allowing two hits over six innings.

Hitting the ball -- often hard -- wasn't a problem for the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Pitching was another matter. Ian Kinsler had five of Detroit's 19 hits, including a home run, and the Tigers used a three-run eighth inning to rally for a 10-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Nick Castellanos had a two-run single and J.D. Martinez added a sacrifice fly in the tie-breaking eighth after Detroit couldn't hold a four run lead. Kinsler, who added a double and sac fly, also scored three runs. Martinez and Anthony Gose also homered for the Tigers in a game that was delayed for 2 hours and 17 minutes after a strong thunderstorm hit with one out in the bottom of the third.

After lining out three times earlier in the game, Castellanos' soft single in the eighth that drove in two runs turned out to be key.

Angels 5, White Sox 3

The Los Angeles Angels were well aware that they had to get to John Danks early because he has a history of making things tough on them. So they came out swinging, and it paid off.

Kole Calhoun and Albert Pujols homered in the first inning against the Chicago White Sox left-hander, and the Angels held on for a 5-3 victory Tuesday night to remain 2 1-2 games behind first-place Houston in the AL West.

Garrett Richards (12-9) was charged with three runs -- two earned -- and eight hits in seven-plus innings with four strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander retired Melky Cabrera on double-play grounders his first two times up, then struck him out in the sixth with the potential tying run at the plate.
