Arrieta, Fowler Lead Cubs Win, Cardinals Drop Contest To Phillies

After botching an easy comebacker to the mound in the third inning, Jake Arrieta made certain he never lost control of the game. Arrieta pitched a four-hitter and Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam, leading the Chicago Cubs over the Minnesota Twins 8-0 on Sunday.

Arrieta (6-6) walked a career-high six in his last start, but didn't walk anyone and struck out seven for his second career shutout and first since last Sept. 16 against Cincinnati.

Arrieta was anything but comfortable after flubbing an easy chopper by Byron Buxton for an error in the third inning. Buxton eventually made it all the way to third base, but Arrieta escaped the inning without any damage.

Arrieta then set down 16 of the next 17 hitters he faced, and was extra careful not to make another mistake on three other comebackers later in the game.

Phillies 9, Cardinals 2

The Phillies finally got a victory from a starting pitcher. And Adam Morgan might have been the most unlikely candidate to break their monthlong drought.

Winless in the minors this year, Morgan won his major league debut in surprising style, outpitching Michael Wacha and leading Philadelphia past the St. Louis Cardinals 9-2 Sunday.

"I'm just very, very happy for the opportunity. Very grateful," Morgan said. "I didn't want to try to do too much or overthink. The main thing was keeping the ball down."

Morgan (1-0) allowed one run and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two against the team with the best record in the majors.

White Sox 3, Rangers 2

Along with many of the White Sox hitters, Gordon Beckham hasn't been pleased with his lack of offensive production. He hopes that will change after his first career game-winning home run.

Beckham led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a homer and Melky Cabrera went 5 for 5 and the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Sunday.

Ryan Rua and Leonys Martin homered for the Rangers, who dropped two of three to the White Sox. The White Sox have won two straight after losing a season-high eight straight games.
