Matt Holliday's on-base streak ended at a National League-record 45 games to start the season long before Trevor Rosenthal got a double-play ball for the final outs.

The St. Louis Cardinals No. 3 hitter said he was surprised to have been ejected by plate umpire Joe West after arguing a called third strike in the seventh inning of a 1-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

"I obviously disagreed with the call," Holliday said. "I didn't say any cross words to the umpire, I didn't say any cuss words, I didn't call him any names.

"And apparently he didn't like that I was even mentioning balls and strikes, and that was it," Holliday said.

West declined comment to a pool reporter after Holliday spoke.

Marlins 5, Cubs 2

Miami Marlins left-hander Brad Hand stood at his locker eager to talk about a rare win, but the clubhouse stereo made conversation impossible, so he just smiled while rapper 2 Chainz's "Birthday Song" blared away.

"I like that song," Hand said.

After a couple of minutes, someone finally pulled the plug on 2 Chainz, and Hand explained how he and the Miami Marlins beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 Tuesday night.

"I managed to make pitches when I needed to," he said.

Hand (1-1) did that for six innings and improved his career record as a starter to 5-18 in 33 outings. Even with the victory, his winning percentage as a starter (.217) is the lowest in the majors among active pitchers with at least 20 decisions, according to STATS.

Rangers 15, White Sox 2

Joey Gallo walked into the Texas Rangers clubhouse after his major league debut carrying three baseballs. One was from his first hit, which came in his first at-bat. There was also the home run hit into the upper deck his next time up, and the double that ricocheted off the top of the wall in right-center field.

"I definitely did not think this was going to happen the first game," Gallo said. "I was just going to be happy to get on base the first game, so I definitely overachieved my goals there."

The top prospect in the Rangers organization had those three hits, set a franchise record for an MLB debut with four RBI, walked and even got a standing ovation after striking out with the bases loaded in the Rangers' 15-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

"That easy? For real, it's that easy? We lost one of the best players and we bring that guy from Double-A, and to perform the way he did was freaking awesome," said Carlos Corporan, who had a career-high five RBI.
