The moment Kris Bryant made contact, just about everyone in the Cubs' dugout rose to take a look. It was hard to tell if the ball struck the top of the new videoboard in left or went over it. Either way, Bryant had the most impressive hit of the night. The winning swing went to Addison Russell.
The rookie infielder hit a game-ending RBI double in the ninth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the surging Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Russell's hit made a winner of Hector Rondon (3-0), who worked a scoreless ninth. It also gave Chicago a major league-leading 13 one-run victories and sent the Nationals to their second loss in 10 games. Bryant's towering drive in the eighth tied it at 2 and helped set the stage for the big finish.
"I've hit some good home runs in my short time here on this Earth," Bryant said. "That was a good one for me, and there was a little wind blowing out, too."
Chris Coghlan started the winning rally with a one-out single against Matt Grace (2-1). The Cubs then caught a huge break when shortstop Ian Desmond threw wide to first while trying to turn a potential double play on pinch-hitter Jonathan Herrera's grounder to second.
That extended the inning, and Russell lined a 1-0 pitch beyond center fielder Denard Span's reach for his third hit of the game.
Cardinals 6, Diamondbacks 4
Jaime Garcia knows there's plenty of room for improvement. He had two mishaps covering first base, one of them contributing to the Arizona Diamondbacks' two-run first, and bounced a few fastballs, too. The St. Louis Cardinals lefty has been waiting long enough for a taste of success that none of it bothered him too much.
"It probably wasn't my best," Garcia said after winning for the first time in nearly a year in a 6-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. "It's been a long time but I try not to think about it that way.
"Whatever happened today, you put it in the past and you move forward and get ready for the next one."
Randal Grichuk homered with two RBI and Jhonny Peralta also drove in two runs for the Cardinals, who are a major league-best 30-16. Garcia (1-1) hadn't won since June 15 at home against the Nationals.
Blue Jays 10, White Sox 9
Josh Donaldson thrives on coming through in the clutch. He did just that Tuesday night. Donaldson hit a three-run homer off David Robertson in the ninth inning, his second home run of the game, lifting the Toronto Blue Jays over the Chicago White Sox 10-9.
"That's probably one of the better feelings in baseball, to hit a walkoff homer," Donaldson said. "You don't get the opportunity very often. When you're able to do it, it definitely feels rewarding."
It's the second time this season, and fifth time in his career, Donaldson has ended a game with a home run: he did it in the 10th inning of a 6-5 win over Atlanta on April 18.
