The St. Louis Cardinals reminded Jhonny Peralta it was getting close to dinner time. Then he did something about it. Peralta hit a game-ending homer in the 10th inning, lifting the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.
"A lot of the guys said they were hungry," Peralta said. "So, it was good to get the win right there."
Peralta's leadoff drive on a 1-2 pitch from J.C. Ramirez (1-1) was his fourth career game-winning homer. The Cardinals improved to 4-1 in five extra-inning home games in May, including a sweep against the Pirates at the beginning of the month, and they lead the majors with eight extra-inning games overall.
Peralta's seventh homer just cleared the wall in left. He was too busy running to notice.
Nationals 2, Cubs 1
Tanner Roark made a successful return to Washington's rotation on Monday. It was like he never left. Roark pitched five effective innings, Wilson Ramos hit a tiebreaking homer and the Nationals beat the Cubs 2-1 in the first major league matchup of young sluggers Bryce Harper and Chicago rookie Kris Bryant.
Denard Span also homered for NL East-leading Washington, which has won eight of nine. Making his first start of the season in place of the injured Doug Fister, Roark (1-2) allowed Bryant's sixth home run and struck out three. Four relievers combined for four innings of two-hit ball, with Drew Storen working the ninth for his NL-best 15th save in 16 attempts -- closing out the five-hitter.
Blue Jays 6, White Sox 0
Drew Hutchison shook off an illness, and then pitched a gem. Hutchison tossed a four-hitter, Justin Smoak and Josh Donaldson homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Chicago White Sox 6-0 on Monday night.
Hutchison (4-1) allowed four singles, struck out eight and walked none while throwing just 96 pitches in his second career shutout. The other came at Texas on May 16, 2014.
