ST. LOUIS -- Throughout the St. Louis Cardinals' eight-game winning streak, Mark Reynolds has brought out the lineup card. Manager Mike Matheny isn't particularly superstitious, but there's no reason to mess with a good thing. Lately, Reynolds has been a lot more than a good luck charm.

"I don't think there's anyone in this clubhouse that doesn't think we're going to win every night," Reynolds said after his pinch-hit double off the wall in center field snapped a tie in the sixth inning of a 7-4 victory over Chicago on Tuesday night. "I've been really squaring balls up. I really want to bottle it up."

Matt Carpenter tied the game with a three-run homer off Kyle Hendricks in the fifth and finished with four RBIs. Kolten Wong added an RBI in the seventh on an infield single, his third hit of the game. For the second straight game, the Cardinals overcame subpar starting pitching.

"We had to fight our way through this again," Matheny said. "The guys did a nice job of staying the course."

Mitch Harris (1-0), a 29-year-old rookie and former Navy lieutenant, worked a scoreless sixth for his first career victory. Trevor Rosenthal earned his ninth save in 10 chances.

White Sox 5, Tigers 2

The White Sox needed a win after a lousy road trip, and Jeff Samardzija wanted the ball. That last start in an empty ballpark had stayed with him for days, and he was ready to put it behind him. Samardzija pitched seven effective innings, and Chicago snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.

Back at home after a trying week, the White Sox chased Shane Greene in the third inning of their first win in nine days. Two of their three games in Baltimore were postponed due to riots near Camden Yards, and they were swept in a four-game series at Minnesota.

Samardzija (2-2) allowed a run in each of the first two innings, and then pitched four-hit ball for the rest of his outing. The right-hander struck out seven and walked one in his first game since he took the loss for a rocky five innings in an 8-2 loss to the Orioles last Wednesday that was closed to the public due to the unrest.
