Peter Bourjos' well-rested legs made all the difference both at the top of the batting order and in center field for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bourjos made just his second start of the season count by hitting a game-tying RBI triple and scoring the go-ahead run by beating the throw home on an infield tapper to fuel a four-run fifth inning in a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.

"Any time you get a chance to start and play, it's a lot of fun," Bourjos said. "It's a tough role, but when you can get some hits and help the team win, it makes it even more special."

Carlos Martinez (3-0) allowed two runs in six innings and Matt Adams doubled twice with an RBI.

Pirates 8, Cubs 1

Andrew McCutchen reached the 1,000-hit plateau Wednesday night, which was a big deal to nearly everyone in the Pittsburgh Pirates' clubhouse -- except McCutchen.

"It's a good milestone," he said, "but I don't want to stop there."

The All-Star center fielder was more focused on the final result, Pittsburgh's 8-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Gerrit Cole allowed three hits over six innings, McCutchen had the key hit with a two-run triple and the Pirates salvaged the finale of the three-game series, snapping the Cubs' four-game winning streak.

Orioles 8, White Sox 2

The cheers from the small group of Orioles fans gathered outside the locked gates beyond center field echoed throughout an empty Camden Yards every time the home team scored a run.

There was no roar of the crowd inside the ballpark on this surreal day.In what was believed to be the first major league game played without fans in attendance, Chris Davis hit a three-run homer in a six-run first inning Wednesday and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2.

"It was kind of like instructional league, Gulf Coast League, Arizona League," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of the lack of fans.

The game was closed to fans out of concern for their safety following recent rioting in Baltimore after Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man, died in police custody. The unusual decision to play the game was made because it was the best time to fill out the schedule for both teams.
