Cardinals Pound Phillies, Cubs Down Pirates

Juggling the batting order paid off for the St. Louis Cardinals. Facing a pitcher making his major league debut did not hurt either. The Cardinals scored seven runs off Severino Gonzalez in the first three innings and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 11-5 on Tuesday night. St. Louis finished with a season high in runs and hits (15) to win for the first time in three games.
Trying to jolt his offense, manager Mike Matheny moved Matt Carpenter out of the leadoff spot for the first time in nearly two years. Jason Heyward was dropped from second to sixth and Jon Jay took over at the top of the order. All three contributed in their new places in the order.
Carpenter tripled and scored in the first, had an RBI double in the fifth and walked and scored in the eighth. The double was his 12th, most in the majors and the most in franchise history after 19 games.
Cubs 6, Pirates 2
Perhaps the most surprising part of the Chicago Cubs' fast start is that they are leading the National League in stolen bases after five on Tuesday night. So far they have 25, while last season they ranked 24th in the majors with 65 total.
"A big part of that is want to," manager Joe Maddon said. "There's a lot of want to in stealing bases. There's that cavalier attitude that's necessary where you're not afraid to make a mistake."
The Cubs certainly haven't been making many mistakes of late. Dexter Fowler had three hits and two RBIs, Travis Wood tossed seven strong innings and the Cubs won their fourth straight, 6-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
White Sox, Orioles Postponed
After a pair of postponements caused by rioting in Baltimore, the Orioles and Chicago White Sox will play Wednesday at Camden Yards in what is believed to be the first game without fans in major league baseball's 145-season history. Because of the unsettled environment in Baltimore, where rioters burned a drug store and set police cars ablaze on Monday night, officials moved the game up five hours from its original 7:05 p.m. starting time and closed it to the public.
In addition, Baltimore's Friday-to-Sunday series against Tampa Bay was shifted from Camden Yards to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, with the Orioles remaining the home team and batting last.
