ST. LOUIS -- Matt Garza struggled with control woes, issuing five walks. Shortstop Jean Segura had trouble getting his throws to first and Ryan Braun couldn't quite pull off a shoestring catch. Warts and all, the Milwaukee Brewers did just enough to spoil the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener.

"It was kind of an ugly win," manager Ron Roenicke said after a 5-4 victory on Monday. "Right now, it's a win."

Carlos Gomez had two hits and an RBI for the Brewers, coming off a 1-5 opening home stand but far from desperate.

"It's only seven games," Gomez said. "You see the Red Sox in 2013, they lost 11 games straight and they won the World Series."

Adam Wainwright (1-1) started his fourth opener at 10-year-old Busch Stadium and gave up five runs -- three earned -- in seven innings. Jhonny Peralta had two hits, including a two-run double off Jeremy Jeffress that cut the deficit to a run in the seventh.

Cubs 7, Reds 6

Jorge Soler came through big and helped the Cubs rally for a win after ace Jon Lester struggled in his second start with Chicago. Soler had a pair of two-run home runs -- including a game-tying shot in the eighth inning -- and Arismendy Alcantara had an RBI single in the 10th to lift the Cubs to a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Soler, 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs, was the talk of the locker room after the game.

"His power is just ridiculous," Lester said. "He's so young, he's so raw. He's got a long way to go, and he's pretty good now."

Soler's performance took the focus off of a shaky outing by Lester, who gave up six runs and 10 hits in six innings as his ERA ballooned to 7.84.

Mets 2, Phillies 0

Even without his sharpest stuff, Jacob deGrom got the Mets off to a successful start at home. He also gave Matt Harvey a nice round number to match: zero. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year, deGrom pitched into the seventh inning as New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 Monday to win its home opener.
