Hearts Lose to Highland; Other Friday Scores

The Highland Bulldogs scored three runs apiece in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 12-2 five-inning win over the Effingham Hearts Friday.
The Hearts scored single runs in the third and fifth innings, but that was not enough to counteract a Highland offense that capitalized on 11 hits and six walks.
Ryan Barnes pitched 2-2/3 innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out two. Kevin Daugherty, back from an injury suffered in football season, pitched 1-1/3 innings, surrendering three runs on two hits and four walks. Lane Koenig got the last two outs, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk while registering two strikeouts.
At the dish for Effingham, Braydon Bone singled twice and scored a run, Brennan Poland tripled and drove in a run, Carter Hayes drove in the other Hearts' run, Lane Koenig doubled, Reed Schafer singled, and Adam Koester singled and scored.
The Hearts are now 4-3 on the spring.

Teutopolis got two runs in the ninth to down Flora 4-2 Friday.
T-Town took a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Flora scored twice in the bottom of the frame to take a brief lead, but the Shoes tied the game with a run in the sixth.
Kyle Smith started for Teutopolis and pitched 5-2/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out eight. Devin Smith got the win in relief, pitching 3-1/3 innings, giving up two hits and a walk while fanning five.
Austin Johnson had a big day at the plate for Teutopolis, going four-for-five and scoring a run. Also for the Shoes: Blake Mette singled twice and scored, Jordan Thoele tripled, scored and drove in a run, Austin Hartke singled and drove in a run, Devin Smith singled, Tommy Flach singled, and Jordan Bloemer drove in a run.
Teutopolis improved to 7-2 on the spring.
Teutopolis also won a 5-0 frosh-soph game Friday over Mt. Zion.
