John Lackey worked into the fifth inning in his second spring start, allowing four runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-6 Sunday. Adam Jones homered twice for Baltimore, driving in four runs and Manny Machado hit a solo home run. Jones hit a three-run homer in the fifth off Mitch Wilson. He also homered in the fourth off Lackey. The center fielder has three home runs this spring. Machado homered and doubled against Lackey.

Manager Mike Matheny is allowing Lackey to work his way into form, but did take him on a cross state road trip.

"All things considered, I felt pretty good. Being 36 and riding 3 1/2 hours on a bus," Lackey said.

Padres 6, Cubs 1

Sunday was just the kind of day starting pitchers want to see as spring training begins to wind down. The Padres' James Shields pitched five hitless innings, while the Cubs' Jason Hammel struck out nine in San Diego's 6-1 Cactus League victory. The Padres broke open a 1-1 tie in the eighth on Tommy Medica's pinch two-run homer off Cubs relief pitcher Francisley Bueno.

San Diego scored three more times in the ninth, some thanks to Brett Wallace's bases-loaded, two RBI single. Abraham Almonte had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Padres. The Cubs' only run came in the sixth inning, when Arismendy Alcantara hit a home run on the first pitch from reliever Jose Valverde.

Brewers 13, White Sox 4

Milwaukee's Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun hit consecutive home runs off White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija in the fifth inning during the Brewers' 13-4 win over Chicago on Sunday. The Brewers had 16 hits, five of which were home runs, one apiece for Matt Clark, Elian Herrera and Logan Schafer. Milwaukee has scored 24 runs on 33 hits in the last two days. Braun, who started the spring hitless in 12 at-bats, is 3 for 6 since with two home runs.

"The guys are getting is shape and getting ready to go," Lucroy said. "You can see the at-bats improving. I take BP with (Braun) every day and his ball is looking like it was in 2012 (when he won the Most Valuable Player award). It's flying off his bat."
