Cubs Blank Reds

(Chicago, IL) -- Jake Arrieta took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and fired a complete game one-hit shutout as the Cubs blanked the Reds 7-0 at Wrigley Field.  Arrieta racked up 13 strikeouts and walked one for his ninth win. Jorge Soler hit a home run and drove in two while Chris Coghlan finished with three RBI. The Cubs have won three of their last four. Johnny Cueto walked five and allowed six earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for the loss. Cueto struck out eight with his record falling to 18-9. Brandon Phillips recorded the lone hit in for the Reds and Billy Hamilton walked. The Reds' elimination number is two.

Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs and Paul Konerko of the White Sox are nominated for this year's Roberto Clemente Award. It represents sportsmanship and community involvement. Fans can vote at ChevyBaseball.com. The winner will be announced during the World Series.

The Chicago Cubs are extending their player development contract with Triple-A Iowa through the 2018 season. The current deal was set to expire after 2016.  The Cubs have been affiliated with Iowa since 1981.  


Brewers Rally To Beat Cardinals In 12

(St. Louis, MO) -- Hector Gomez singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Brewers past the Cardinals 3-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Matt Clark plated the tying run with a sac-fly in the top of the ninth. Gerardo Parra homered in the fourth for Milwaukee, which has won five of six and is now four games behind St. Louis for first place in the NL Central. The Brewers are also just a game-and-a-half behind Pittsburgh for the second Wild Card spot. Brandon Kintzler notched the win and Francisco Rodriguez posted his 42nd save. Matt Adams walked in a run and Jon Jay scored on a double play ball for the Redbirds, who had won their previous three. Kevin Siegrist took the loss. The Cards are two-and-a-half up on Pittsburgh in the division.

The Cardinals and Brewers continue their three-game series with the middle game tonight at Busch Stadium. Adam Wainwright goes after his 19th win for St. Louis, while Milwaukee hands the ball to Mike Fiers. The Cardinals home series is this weekend against the Reds.

Pitcher Jason Motte is the Cardinals' nominee for this year's Roberto Clemente Award. All 30 clubs nominate one player based on both sportsmanship and community involvement. Fans can vote at ChevyBaseball.com. The winner will be announced during the World Series.


Gillaspie Lifts White Sox Past Royals

(Kansas City, MO) -- Conor Gillaspie smacked a go-ahead three-run triple in the seventh inning to lift the White Sox past the Royals 7-5 at Kauffman Stadium. Alexei Ramirez drove in a run and scored, while Adam Eaton went 4-for-5 and scored twice for Chicago, which snapped a brief two-game skid. Eric Surkamp picked up the win and Zach Putnam earned his fifth save. Alex Gordon had a two-run single and a run scored and Norichika Aoki had four hits, an RBI and scored for the Royals, who remain a game-and-a-half behind the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers and are now just one game up on Seattle for the second Wild Card spot. Kelvin Herrera suffered the loss.


Nationals Clinch National League East

(Atlanta, GA) -- The Nationals clinched the National League East with a 3-0 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Ian Desmond accounted for all three runs with a two-run homer and scoring on a wild pitch. Tanner Roark earned his 14th win with seven shutout innings and Drew Storen nailed down his seventh save.  Washington has taken the first two of the three-game set. Phil Gosselin and Chris Johnson had two hits apiece for Atlanta. Aaron Harang took the tough-luck loss, striking out eight and giving up two runs over seven innings. Atlanta is 5 1/2 games out of the second NL Wild Card spot.


Mets Smoke Marlins

(Flushing, NY) -- Wilmer Flores blew up hitting two home runs with six RBI leading the Mets to a 9-1 win over the Marlins in the second of three at Citi Field. Bartolo Colon earned his 14th win working around 12 hits to allow one run in 7 2/3 innings. Ruben Tejada had two hits and drove in two for New York, which has pulled to within six games of .500. Miami was 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Donovan Solano and Reed Johnson each had three hits, while Nathan Eovaldi took the loss after giving up six runs and not making it out of the fifth inning. The Marlins are 73-77.


Rockies Roll Dodgers

(Denver, CO) -- Corey Dickerson blasted a two-run homer and totaled four RBI to lead the Rockies to a 10-4 win over the Dodgers at Coors Field. Justin Morneau and Michael McKenry both tallied a pair of hits and drove in a run to help Colorado snap a seven-game losing streak. Tyler Matzek struck out six in 5 1/3 innings to pick up his sixth win. Dan Haren got hammered for five runs in five frames to fall to 13-11 for LA, which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Yasiel Puig belted a two-run shot and Justin Turner plated a pair of runs in defeat. The Dodgers are now three games in front of the Giants for first place in the NL West.


Giants Edge Diamondbacks

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Brandon Crawford plated the go-ahead run on a sac-fly in the seventh inning as the Giants edged the Diamondbacks 2-1 in the second of three at Chase Field. Buster Posey belted his 21st homer of the year in the fourth for San Francisco, which snapped a three-game losing streak and is now three games behind NL West-leading Los Angeles. The Dodgers lost in Colorado on Tuesday. Jake Peavy pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball to improve his mark to 6-4. Santiago Casilla closed it out for his 16th save. A.J. Pollock plated the lone run for the D'backs, who had won their previous three. Josh Collmenter allowed both runs in eight frames as he fell to 10-8 with the tough-luck loss.


Padres Clip Phillies

(San Diego, CA) -- Alexi Amarista went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer to guide the Padres to a 5-4 victory over the Phillies from Petco Park. Will Venable and Jedd Gyorko each chipped in an RBI to help San Diego to its second straight win. Ian Kennedy fanned seven batters in six innings to pick up his 11th win and Kevin Quackenbush closed it out for the save.  A.J. Burnett gave up four earned runs in five-and-two-thirds innings of his 17th loss of the season for Philly, which has dropped three in-a-row. Freddy Galvis and Domonic Brown both went deep in defeat.


Orioles Clinch American League East

(Baltimore, MD) -- The Orioles clinched first place in the American League East for the first time since 1997 with an 8-2 win over the Blue Jays at Camden Yards. Steve Pearce hit a three-run homer, while Jimmy Paredes connected for a solo shot. Ubaldo Jimenez grabbed his fifth win, allowing two runs and striking out six in five innings. Baltimore has won nine of 10. Drew Hutchison struck out 11, but gave up six runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings to take his 12th loss. Jose Reyes and Edwin Encarnacion each had an RBI in the defeat. Toronto is five games out of the second AL Wild Card spot.


Benches Clear As Rays Roll Yankees

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Yunel Escobar's bunt-single plated the go-ahead run as the Rays went on to a 6-1 win over the Yankees at Tropicana Field.  Jake Odorizzi allowed one run over six frames for the win and Will Myers drove in two runs during a four-run seventh. Steven Geltz started a bench clearing altercation after hitting Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter in the eighth inning. Manager Joe Girardi was ejected for instigating following the hit-by-pitch while pitcher David Phelps and bench coach Tony Pena were tossed after Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier was brushed back the next inning. Ichiro Suzuki drove in the lone run for New York. Michael Pineda took the loss after allowing one earned run through 5 1/3 innings. The Yankees sit six games out of a Wild Card spot.


Indians Top Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Corey Kluber struck out a career-high 14 hitters over seven innings to pitch the Indians to a 4-2 win over the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Kluber improved to 16-and-9 after allowing one run and seven hits with Cody Allen notching his 21st save. Yan Gomes hit a two-run home run and Carlos Santana plated the other RBI as the Indians sit five games back of the second Wild Card spot. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve collected two hits and passed Craig Biggio as the franchise single-season hits leader set back in 1998. Alex Presley and Marwin Gonzalez drove in runs in the loss. Nick Tropeano allowed one earned run in five frames to fall to 1-1.


Twins Walk Off Tigers

(Minneapolis, MN) -- A wild ninth inning concluded with Aaron Hicks' RBI infield single giving the Twins a 4-3 walk-off win over the Tigers in the second of three at Target Field. Minnesota entered the top of the ninth with a 2-0 lead when J.D Martinez connected for a three-run homer off Glen Perkins. In the bottom of the frame, Kurt Suzuki tied the game on a one-run double off Joe Nathan before Hicks' game-winning base knock. Perkins was handed the win and Nathan fell to 4-4. Ricky Nolasco wasn't apart of the decision for Minnesota despite throwing eight shutout innings. The Tigers remain a game-and-a-half ahead of the Royals for first place in the AL Central.


Mariners Hammer Angels

(Anaheim, CA) -- Chris Taylor knocked in three runs as the Mariners hammered the Angels 13-2 in the second of four games in Anaheim. Austin Jackson, Dustin Ackley and Mike Zunino drove in two runs apiece for Seattle, which snapped a three-game skid and is now just one game behind Kansas City for the second AL Wild Card spot. Carson Smith picked up his first career win. Albert Pujols and David Freese both plated a run in the first inning for the Halos, who have dropped two of three since a 10-game winning streak. Jason Grilli suffered the loss.


Rangers Rock Athletics

(Oakland, CA) -- Jake Smolinski belted a two-run homer as Texas topped Oakland 6-3 from the Coliseum. It was Smolinski's first career round-tripper and his first at-bat since July 21st after going on the disabled list. Adrian Beltre doubled twice in the victory while Rougned Odor and Robinson Chirinos added an RBI each. Nick Tepesch grabbed the win with three-run ball through six innings and Neftali Feliz locked down his 10th save. Scott Kazmir allowed four earned runs in four-and-a-third-innings for the loss. Brandon Moss hit a solo shot for Oakland, which still holds the top Wild Card spot.


Pirates Blank Red Sox

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Russell Martin blasted a two-run homer to help guide the Pirates to a 4-0 win over the Red Sox at PNC Park. Starling Marte cracked a solo shot and Travis Snider batted in a run for Pittsburgh, which has won five of six. Charlie Morton struck out six in five frames of work to improve to 6-12 on the year. The Pirates are two-and-a-half games behind the Cardinals for the lead in the NL Central but still hold on to a Wild Card spot. Anthony Ranaudo got tagged for three runs in 5 2/3 innings to fall to 3-3. Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-4 for Boston, which had won three of four entering the game.
