Cardinals Rock Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI)  --  Adam Wainwright fired a complete game and allowed one run as the Cardinals rolled the Brewers 9-1 at Miller Park.  Wainwright improved to 17-and-9 with three strikeouts and one walk.  Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer in the win and Matt Carpenter added two RBI.  The Cardinals lead the NL Central by four-and-a-half games over Pittsburgh.  Carlos Gomez drove in the lone run in a pinch-hit single for Milwaukee, which remains a half-game out of the second Wild Card spot.  Jimmy Nelson fell to 2-7 after allowing four runs in five frames.


Pirates Top Cubs

(Chicago, IL)  --  Gerrit Cole tossed six-plus innings of four-run ball as the Pirates topped the Cubs 10-4 to sweep the three-game series at Wrigley Field.  Cole improved to 8-and-5 while hitting a two-run homer.  Neil Walker, Jordy Mercer and Andrew McCutchen also went deep for Pittsburgh, which is four-and-a-half games back of St. Louis for first in the NL Central.  The Bucs are half a game up on the Braves and Brewers for the second Wild Card spot.  Travis Wood gave up seven runs in under two innings for the loss.  Mike Olt was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Chicago.

 

Indians Top White Sox

(Cleveland, OH)  --  Carlos Carrasco tossed eight-and-two-thirds innings of four-hit ball as the Indians blanked the White Sox 2-0 from Cleveland.  Carrasco improved to 7-and-4 while Cleveland swept the Sox.  Michael Brantley was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Tribe.  Cody Allen locked up his 19th save.  Cleveland sits three-and-a-half games behind Seattle for the second Wild Card spot.  Scott Carroll allowed two runs in seven innings for the loss.  Chicago has lost four straight.

 

Marlins Down Braves

(Miami, FL)  --  Jarrod Saltalamacchia [[ SALL-tuh-luh-MAH-kee-uh ]] had two RBI to power the Marlins to a 4-0 win over the Braves from Miami.  Donovan Solano and Marcell Ozuna each knocked in a run for Miami, which took two of three in the series.  Brad Hand allowed five hits in six scoreless innings for the win.  Julio Teheran [[ teh-RON ]] gave up four runs in five-and-a-third innings for the loss.  Atlanta trails Pittsburgh by a half-game for the second Wild Card spot.


Mets Beat Reds

(Cincinnati, OH)  --  Anthony Recker launched a two-run dinger to help the Mets top the Reds 4-3 at Great American Ball Park.  Curtis Granderson added two RBI and a solo shot for the Mets, who have won four of five.  Zack Wheeler allowed one run through six frames for the win and Jenrry Mejia  notched his 24th save.  Mat Latos allowed three unearned runs in six innings to fall to 5-5.  Jay Bruce tagged a solo shot in the loss and Ryan Ludwick chipped in an RBI.  The Reds have lost five of six.


Nationals Edge Phillies

(Washington, DC)  --  Adam LaRoche blasted two solo shots to lead the Nationals to a 3-2 victory over the Phillies at Nationals Park.  Scott Hairston broke a 2-2 tie with a sac-fly in the bottom of the sixth to help Washington avoid the three-game sweep.  Gio Gonzalez gave up one earned run in six innings to improve to 8-and-9 on the season.  Cole Hamels struck out seven in six-and-a-third innings but surrendered all three runs to fall to 8-7.  Darin Ruf plated a run and Grady Sizemore scored on an error for the Phillies, who had won four of five entering the game.


Rockies Blank Padres

(Denver, CO)  --  Franklin Morales tossed six shutout innings to lead the Rockies in a 6-0 win over the Padres at Coors Field.  Morales improved to 6-and-7 while allowing just four hits and two walks.  Jackson Williams jacked a three-run homer while Nolan Arenado added a two-run shot.  Charlie Blackmon added an RBI triple as Colorado capped a three-game sweep and won its fourth straight overall.  Tyson Ross dipped to 13-and-13 after giving up three runs in five-and-two-thirds innings for San Diego.  Jedd Gyorko [[ JERK-oh ]] had two hits including a double as the Padres lost their fifth straight.


Gonzalez Carries Dodgers Past Diamondbacks

(Los Angeles, CA)  --  Adrian Gonzalez blasted two home runs and totaled six RBI to lead the Dodgers to a 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks at Dodgers Stadium.  Matt Kemp chipped in with a solo shot and Justin Turner went 2-for-3 to help LA pick up the three-game sweep of Arizona.  The Dodgers are three games ahead of the Giants for first place in the NL West.  Zack Greinke threw six innings of two-run ball to improve to 14-and-8.  Cody Ross went 3-for-4 with an RBI-single for Arizona, which has lost five of seven.  Trevor Cahill gave up three runs in five-and-two-thirds innings for his 11th loss.


Royals Top Yankees

(Bronx, NY)  --  Yordano Ventura tossed six-plus scoreless innings as the Royals topped the Yankees 2-0 from the Bronx.  Ventura moved to 12-and-9 as Kansas City maintains a two-game lead over the Tigers in the AL Central.  Eric Hosmer had an RBI for KC.  Wade Davis locked up his second save.  Shane Greene allowed two unearned runs in five innings for the loss.  New York sits four-and-a-half behind the Mariners for the second AL Wild Card.


Cruz Powers Orioles Past Rays

(St. Petersburg, FL)  --  Nelson Cruz went 4-for-5 with seven RBI to power the Orioles in a 7-5 win over the Rays in 11 innings.  Cruz hit a pair of two-run homers, including the tiebreaking shot in the top of the 11th.  Cruz also tripled in three runs as Baltimore avoided a three-game sweep and lowered its Magic Number to win the AL East down to 12.  Brad Brach [[ brock ]] earned the win in relief while Andrew Miller logged his first career save.  Evan Longoria and James Loney hit solo homers in the first for Tampa Bay while David DeJesus hit an inside-the-park homer in the fourth and Kevin Kiermaier went deep in the sixth.  Cesar Ramos suffered the loss for the Rays, who have lost four of six.


Rangers Edge Mariners

(Arlington, TX)  --  Derek Holland was lights out in his second start of the season as Texas topped Seattle 1-0 from Globe Life Park.  Holland went seven frames and struck out five for his first win.  Neftali Feliz grabbed his eighth save.  Adrian Beltre plated the lone run for the Rangers, who snapped an eight-game skid.  James Paxton gave up a run in six innings as he fell to 5-and-2 with the loss.  Seattle was 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.  Robinson Cano had two hits.  The Mariners hold a half-game lead over Detroit for the second Wild Card spot.


Astros Edge Athletics

(Oakland, CA)  --  Dexter Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth as the Astros rallied to beat the Athletics 4-3 in Oakland.  Jake Marisnick had a sac-fly earlier in the inning to tie the game at three.  Jon Singleton and Gregorio Petit also drove in runs for Houston, which has won six of its last seven.  Jose Veras earned the win in relief while Josh Fields notched his third save.  Nate Freiman hit a two-run homer for Oakland while Ryan Cook took the loss in relief.  The A's have lost eight of ten and sit seven games back of the Angels in the AL West but two up on Seattle for the top Wild Card spot.


Cabrera Leads Tigers Past Giants

(Detroit, MI)  --  Miguel Cabrera clubbed a two-run homer and drove in three as the Tigers beat the Giants 6-1 to avoid a three-game sweep at Comerica Park.  Torii Hunter went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez doubled in a run each for the Tigers, who are two games behind AL Central-leading Kansas City and a half-game back of Seattle for the second Wild Card spot.  Kyle Lobstein tossed five-and-two-thirds innings of one-run ball for his first career win.  Angel Pagan plated the lone run on an infield single in the fifth for San Francisco, which went 3-and-3 on its road trip to Colorado and Detroit.  Tim Hudson allowed three runs in six frames as he fell to 9-and-10 with the loss.
