Cosart, Marlins Blank Cardinals
(Miami, FL) -- Jarred Cosart fired seven shutout innings as the Marlins blanked the Cardinals 3-0 in Miami. Cosart allowed just three hits and a walk as he improved to 1-1 with the Fish and 10-8 on the year. Mike Dunn recorded the final out in the ninth for his first save. Donovan Solano smacked a two-run homer and Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled in the other run for the Marlins, who have won the first two of this three-game series and four of five overall. Mark Ellis had two of the four hits for St. Louis, which has lost four of its last five. Adam Wainwright surrendered three runs in seven frames to fall to 14-7 with the loss.
The Cardinals look to avoid the three-game sweep at the hands of the Marlins tonight at Marlins Park. St. Louis is 62-56 on the season and sends Justin Masterson to the mound. Masterson is 1-1 since being traded from Cleveland. Miami counters with 6-6 Nathan Eovaldi.
Cubs Down Brewers
(Chicago, IL) -- Kyle Hendricks struck out five in seven-and-a-third shutout-innings to lead the Cubs to a 3-0 win over the Brewers at Wrigley Field. Hendricks improved to 4-1 and Hector Rondon closed it out for his 15th save. Anthony Rizzo blasted a solo homer while Justin Ruggiano and Arismendy Alcantara each singled in a run. Wily Peralta gave up all three runs in 6 1/3 innings of work to fall to 14-7 for Milwaukee, which had won four of five entering the game. Mark Reynolds tallied a pair of hits in the Brewers' six-hit effort.
Beckham Sends White Sox Past Giants
(San Francisco, CA) -- Gordon Beckham singed in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning to lift the White Sox to a 3-2 win over the Giants at AT&T Park. Adam Dunn hammered a two-run homer in the opening inning for Chicago, which has won two of three since a four-game skid. Chris Sale struck out 12 in eight shutout innings for the no-decision and Zach Putnam picked up the win. Brandon Crawford plated the tying run in the ninth after Pablo Sandoval scored on a double play earlier in the inning. Santiago Casilla took the loss as San Fran dropped its fifth straight.
Dodgers Double Up Braves
(Atlanta, GA) -- Dan Haren is back on track with a second consecutive solid start in the Dodgers' 4-2 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Haren struck out seven over six innings of two-run ball to improve to 10-9. Kenley Jansen nailed down his 33th save as Los Angeles has won the first two of the four-game series. Carl Crawford had three hits and scored a run, while Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig each had an RBI. B.J. Upton hit a solo shot and Justin Upton drove in his 69th run in the defeat. Starter Mike Minor took the loss despite a solid effort, allowing three runs on eight hits over six-and-two-thirds innings. Minor struck out seven.
Nationals Crush Mets
(Flushing, NY) -- Anthony Rendon, Ian Desmond and Mark Taylor all homered during a five-run sixth inning as the Nationals crushed the Mets 7-1 in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field. Bryce Harper hit a two-run blast in the second inning for Washington, which has won four of its last six. Doug Fister tossed seven scoreless innings to up his mark to 12-and-3. Eric Campbell plated the lone run on a sac-fly in the eighth for the Mets, who have dropped two of three. Rafael Montero was tagged for five runs in five-plus frames as he slipped to 0-3 with the loss.
Despaigne Deals Padres Past Rockies
(San Diego, CA) -- Odrisamer Despaigne totaled eight strike outs in seven shutout innings to guide the Padres to a 4-1 win over the Rockies at Petco Park. Despaigne improved to 3-3 as San Diego picked up its fourth straight victory. Chris Nelson singled in two runs and Abraham Almonte and Alexi Amarista chipped in an RBI each. Yohan Flande fell to 0-5 surrendering two runs in six innings of work. Corey Dickerson blasted a solo shot in the ninth inning for Colorado, which has lost nine of 11.
Yankees, Orioles Rained Out In Baltimore
(Baltimore, MD) -- Tuesday's scheduled game between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards has been postponed by rain. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Friday, September 12. The teams will close out their current series on Wednesday.
Rangers Walk Off On Rays
(Arlington, TX) -- Adam Rosales drew a bases loaded walk-off walk in the 14th inning as Texas beat the Rays 3-2 in Arlington. Leonys Martin went 4-for-6 in the win while Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo drove in a run each. Nick Tepesch gave up two runs in seven frames for the no-decision and Scott Baker grabbed the win in relief. Texas has won two of its last three. Cesar Ramos took the loss for the Rays, who have lost two of their last three contests. Ben Zobrist plated a run and Jeremy Hellickson threw six shutout innings for the no-decision.
Astros Blast Twins
(Houston, TX) -- Chris Carter blasted two home runs and totaled five RBI to lead the Astros to a dominating 10-4 win over the Twins at Minute Maid Park. Jake Marisnick belted a solo shot and Jose Altuve plated two runs to help Houston snap a two-game losing streak. Collin McHugh pitched six innings of one-run ball for his fifth win of the season. Yohan Pino got steamrolled for seven runs in just 4 1/3 innings to fall to 1-5. Oswaldo Arcia went deep twice and Kennys Vargas cracked a home run for Minnesota, which has lost five of seven.
Athletics Slow Down Red-Hot Royals
(Kansas City, MO) -- Josh Donaldson went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI as the Athletics slowed down the red-hot Royals with an 11-3 win at Kauffman Stadium. Brandon Moss had four hits and drove in two for Oakland, which snapped a brief two-game skid. Jon Lester struck out nine over six innings of three-run ball for his seventh straight win. He improved to 3-0 with the A's and 13-7 overall. Alcides Escobar, Norichika Aoki and Salvador Perez plated a run each in the fifth for the Royals, who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end. Jeremy Guthrie gave up six runs, four earned, in 4 2/3 frames as he fell to 8-and-10.
Pirates Hook Tigers
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- The Pirates swept the home portion of their four-game series with the Tigers taking a 4-2 win at PNC Park. The series shifts to Detroit on Wednesday and Thursday. Edinson Volquez improved to 10-7 after allowing two runs with five strikeouts over six innings. Four different players drove in a run for Pittsburgh, which is 5-2 over its last seven. Alex Avila hit a solo homer, while Ian Kinsler had an RBI in the loss. Robbie Ray took the defeat, giving up all four runs in five-plus innings. Detroit has lost four in-a-row and six of seven.
Diamondbacks, Indians Rained Out In Cleveland
(Cleveland, OH) -- Tuesday's game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field has been postponed due to rain. The teams will play a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Red Sox Rally Past Reds
(Cincinnati, OH) -- Yoenis Cespedes smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Red Sox past the Reds 3-2 in the opener of a two-game Interleague series at Great American Ball Park. Xander Bogaerts had two hits and plated the other run in the seventh for Boston, which has won two in-a-row and four of its last six overall. Joe Kelly tossed six innings of two-run ball while Tommy Layne earned his first win. Koji Uehara closed it out for his 26th save. Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco drove in a run each in the first inning for the Reds, who have dropped three of four. Angels Use Seven-Run Sixth To Beat Phillies
(Anaheim, CA) -- Kole Calhoun hit a solo homer and an RBI-single during a seven-run sixth inning as the Angels beat the Phillies 7-2 in the opener of a two-game set in Anaheim. David Freese had a two-run double during the big inning for the Halos, who have won two of three since a four-game skid. C.J. Wilson permitted two runs in six-and-two-thirds innings to up his mark to 9-8. Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd plated a run each for the Phils, who have dropped four of their last five. Antonio Bastardo fell to 5-6 with the loss.
