Marlins Clip Cardinals
(Miami, FL) -- Giancarlo Stanton blasted a pair of home runs and totaled three RBI to lead the Marlins to a 6-5 win over the Cardinals at Marlins Park. Stanton is now tied with two others for the Major League lead with 31 homers. Christian Yelich went 3-for-4 with one RBI and Adeiny Hechavarria plated a run for Miami, which has won three of four. Tom Koehler improved to 8-and-9 with the win and Steve Cishek notched his 30th save. Shelby Miller got tagged for five runs in five innings to fall to 8-9 for St. Louis, which has lost four of its last six. Jon Jay belted a two-run shot and Matt Holliday went 4-for-4 and drove in a run in the loss.
The Cardinals play game two of their three-game series with the Marlins tonight at Marlins Park. St. Louis is 62-55 and looks to avenge yesterday's loss with Adam Wainwright on the mound. Wainwright is 14-and-6 with a 2.28 ERA. Miami counters with former Houston Astro Jarred Cosart. First pitch is set for 6:10.
Brewers Drop Cubs
(Chicago, IL) -- Yovani Gallardo struck out six in seven innings of one-run ball to help guide the Brewers to a 3-1 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Gallardo improved to 7-and-6 with the win and Francisco Rodriguez closed it out for his league-leading 36th save. Mark Reynolds belted his 20th home run of the season. Khris Davis and Scooter Gennett each chipped in an RBI for Milwaukee, which has won four of five. Starlin Castro went 2-for-4 and Chris Coghlan doubled in a run for Chicago. Jake Arrieta fell to 6-4 with the loss for the Cubs, who have lost three of their last four.
White Sox Begin Series In San Francisco Tonight
(San Francisco, CA) -- The White Sox begin a brief two-game series with the Giants tonight in San Francisco. Chris Sale gets the ball for Chicago. He is 10-and-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 18 starts. San Francisco will send out right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, who is 7-8 with a 3.77 ERA.
Recker Homer Lifts Mets Over Phillies
(Philadelphia, PA) -- Anthony Recker snapped a 2-all tie with a three-run homer in the seventh inning to boost the Mets to a 5-3 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Matt den Dekker tied the game at two with an RBI double earlier in the inning. David Wright had a run-scoring single for New York, which took three-of-four in the series. Jon Niese pitched seven innings of two-run ball for his sixth win. Jeurys Familia gave up a run in the ninth before notching his third save. David Buchanan took the loss for Philadelphia. Darin Ruf hit a two-run homer and Chase Utley a pinch-hit RBI double for the Phillies.
Correia Leads Dodgers Past Braves
(Atlanta, GA) -- Kevin Correia tossed six innings of one-run ball in his Dodgers debut as LA beat the Braves 6-2 in the opener of a four-game set at Turner Field. Correia, acquired from Minnesota on Saturday, struck out five as he improved to 6-and-13 overall this season. He also went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored. Carl Crawford went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and plated a run for the Dodgers, who have won five of seven to increase their lead in the NL West to five games over San Francisco. Justin Upton singled in a run in the fourth and Evan Gattis doubled in a run in the ninth for the Braves, who have dropped 10 of their last 12. Julio Teheran allowed five runs in seven-and-a-third frames to fall to 10-9 with his third straight loss.
Padres Edge Rockies
(San Diego, CA) -- Yangervis Solarte hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Padres to a 4-3 win over the Rockies at Petco Park. Yonder Alonso went 2-for-3 with a solo shot and Rymer Liriano plated a run as San Diego won its third straight. Nick Vincent picked up the win and Joaquin Benoit closed it out for his sixth save. Corey Dickerson took care of Colorado's scoring with a three-run homer and Justin Morneau tallied a pair of hits. Boone Logan took the loss for the Rockies, who have dropped four of five and 12 of their last 15 overall.
Orioles Pummel Yankees
(Baltimore, MD) -- The Orioles used the long ball to power past the Yankees 11-3 in the first of three at Camden Yards. After trailing 3-1, Baltimore scored 10 unanswered runs to win its fourth in five games. Chris Davis and Nelson Cruz each launched two-run shots, while Jonathan Schoop connected for a three-run homer. Bud Norris picked up his 10th win after batting through five innings and allowing three runs. O's third baseman Manny Machado left the game early with a right knee sprain. Derek Jeter drove in a run, while Chris Capuano took the loss for New York. Capuano gave up four runs on six hits in six innings. The Yanks have lost three in-a-row.
Rays Blank Rangers
(Arlington, TX) -- Drew Smyly tossed seven-and-two-thirds scoreless innings as the Rays beat the Rangers 7-0 at Globe Life Park. Smyly racked up nine strikeouts and scattered three hits for his first win as a Ray. Matt Joyce drove in two and walked twice in the win while Ben Zobrist plated one. Desmond Jennings added an RBI for the Rays, who have won four of their last five. Colby Lewis gave up two earned runs in five innings and walked four for the loss. Adrian Beltre got on base three times as Texas lost its fourth in five games.
Twins Double Up Astros
(Houston, TX) -- Joe Mauer broke a 2-all tie with an RBI-single in the ninth that ended up plating two runs, as the Twins beat the Astros 4-2 in the first of three in Houston. Danny Santana had three hits, while reliever Brian Duensing picked up the win. Glen Perkins earned his 29th save for Minnesota, which has won two in-a-row after a four-game losing streak. Jose Altuve and Cris Carter each hit solo homers and Josh Fields took the loss. The Astros are 2-5 in their last seven.
Royals Win Eighth Straight; Take AL Central Lead
(Kansas City, MO) -- Alcides Escobar singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the red-hot Royals edged the Athletics 3-2 in the first of four at Kauffman Stadium. Escobar drove in two, while Jarrod Dyson scored the other run on a double play ball for the Royals, who have won eight straight to take a half-game lead on Detroit in the AL Central. KC hasn't been atop the division this late in the season in 11 years. Kelvin Herrera picked up the win and Greg Holland notched his 35th save. Brandon Moss had a two-run single for Oakland, which has lost two straight since a three-game winning streak. Sonny Gray allowed three runs, two earned, in seven frames to fall to 12-6 with the loss.
Pirates Trounce Tigers
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Travis Snider homered twice and drove in four as the Pirates trounced the Tigers 11-6 in the opener of a four-game home-and-home series at PNC Park. Starling Marte had a three-run triple during a five-run first inning, while Russell Martin and Ike Davis hit back-to-back solo homers in the sixth for the Bucs, who snapped a two-game skid. Jeff Locke allowed four runs in five-plus frames to improve his record to 4-3. Rajai Davis went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Miguel Cabrera also had three hits, drove in a run and scored for Detroit, which has dropped three straight and now trails Kansas City by a half-game in the AL Central. Justin Verlander allowed five runs, four earned and left before taking the mound in the second inning with right shoulder soreness. He fell to 10-11 in the shortest outing of his career.
