Rizzo Blasts Two As Cubs Blank Padres

(Chicago, IL) -- Anthony Rizzo hit a pair of solo homers as the Cubs shut down the Padres in a 6-0 win at Wrigley Field. Rizzo now leads the National League with 25 bombs this season. Arismendy Alcantara also went deep while Justin Ruggiano went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Chicago. Kyle Hendricks scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings to get his first win as the Cubs ended a five-game slide. Eric Stults fell to 3-12 after allowing three runs in five frames for San Diego. Brooks Conrad had a double while Seth Smith reached twice as the Padres lost their seventh in 10 games.

The Cubs are parting ways with second baseman Darwin Barney.  The team has designated the former Gold Glove winner for assignment after hitting .230 with two homers this season.  The move was made to clear space for Emilio Bonifacio, who returned from the disabled list.

The Cubs are making some more organizational roster moves.  Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler is being promoted to Triple-A Iowa while fellow outfield prospect Albert Almora will join Double-A Tennessee.  The Cubs are also optioning Mike Olt to Iowa while recalling Tsuyoshi Wada.


Rays Rough Up Wainwright, Cardinals

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Rays got to Adam Wainwright on their way to a 7-2 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Tampa Bay scored five times in the fifth and chased the St. Louis ace as Yunel Escobar ripped a two-run double. Matt Joyce added two hits and an RBI as Tampa won its sixth straight. Evan Longoria added a solo homer later in the game while Jake Odorizzi pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-run ball to improve to 6-8. Wainwright fell to 12-5 after pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing six runs, four earned. Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday each hit a solo homer for the Cards, who have lost three of five.

Brian Stull of CBS Sports 920 reports that Cardinals left-handed reliever Kevin Siegrist will be activated from the disabled list today. Siegrist joined the club again Tuesday after being on the disabled list for two months with a forearm injury, which later developed into a shoulder problem. The 23-year-old has put together five straight scoreless relief appearances for Double-A Springfield.   


Royals Cruise To Win Over White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Mike Moustakas went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI as the Royals picked up a 7-1 win over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.  Raul Ibanez and Omar Infante each drove in a run for Kansas City, which snapped its four-game losing streak. Bruce Chen threw five innings of one-run ball to improve to 2-2. Scott Carroll got rocked for five runs in five-plus frames to fall to 4-6 for the White Sox, who have won two of their last three. Adam Dunn went 2-for-4 with a solo shot and Alexei Ramirez recorded a pair of hits in defeat.


Pirates Outslug Dodgers

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Neil Walker homered, doubled and drove in three as the Pirates outslugged the Dodgers 12-7 in the middle of a three-game series at PNC Park. Gregory Polanco went deep, plated three runs and scored three times for the Bucs, who have won four of five since the break. Ike Davis also homered and drove in two in the victory. Vance Worley permitted four runs, just one earned, in six innings as he improved to 3-1. Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and knocked in three and Scott Van Slyke added a solo shot for LA, which had won its previous two. Paul Maholm suffered the loss.


Giants Outlast Phillies In 14

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Brandon Crawford doubled in three of his four RBI in the top of the 14th inning to lift the Giants to a 9-6 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Hector Sanchez batted in another run in the 14th frame and Buster Posey went 4-for-7 with a solo homer in the top of the ninth to force extras. Hunter Pence had three hits and belted a solo shot of his own for San Francisco, which has won four of five to start the second half of the season.  George Kontos picked up the win and starter Tim Lincecum notched the save. Jeff Manship gave up the four 14th-inning runs to fall to 1-2 for the Phillies, who have lost three straight and four of five. Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer and Marlon Byrd drove in a pair of runs in the loss.


Marlins Edge Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Christian Yelich went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored three times as the Marlins clipped the Braves 6-5 at Turner Field. Donovan Solano finished 4-for-4 with a run while Giancarlo Stanton had two hits and knocked one in. Jacob Turner allowed two runs over five innings to improve to 3-6 and Steve Cishek notched his 23rd save. Miami has won three straight since a six-game slide. Mike Minor was rocked for six runs in three-plus innings, falling to 3-6 for Atlanta. Justin Upton hit his 18th homer while Jason Heyward was 2-for-4 with three RBI. The Braves have lost three of five since the All-Star break.


Lucroy Sends Reds Home

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Jonathan Lucroy hit a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the Reds in the second of three from Miller Park. It was Lucroy's second long ball of the game as Milwaukee scored all four runs on solo bombs. Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez went back-to-back in the opening inning. Closer Francisco Rodriguez grabbed his fourth win for the Brewers, who go for the sweep Wednesday afternoon. Cincinnati tied the game in the seventh inning on a Chris Heisey sacrifice fly. Jay Bruce had an RBI double to get the Reds on the board in the fourth, while reliever Sam LeCure took his second loss.


Nationals Drop Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Adam LaRoche went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer to help guide the Nationals to a 7-4 win over the Rockies at Coors Field. Wilson Ramos drove in two runs and pitcher Jordan Zimmermann tallied an RBI as Washington won its fourth straight game. Zimmermann struck out six over five innings for the no-decision and Craig Stammen picked up his first win. Brooks Brown took the loss for Colorado. Nick Arenado and Corey Dickerson went deep and DJ LeMahieu was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Rockies, who have lost seven straight.


Headley Caps Crazy Day With Game Winning Hit

(Bronx, NY) -- Chase Headley wasn't even in the dugout when the game began, but he came away with a walk-off RBI single in the 14th to give the Yankees a 2-1 win over the Rangers in the Bronx. Headley was acquired by New York from the Padres earlier in the day and introduced himself to teammates during the second inning. In the 13th, Texas jumped ahead on a J.P. Arencibia solo shot then the Yanks answered with a one-run single from Jacoby Ellsbury to extend the game in the bottom of the inning.  Reliever Jeff Francis came away with the victory as New York has won four out of five. Texas fell to 20 games under .500. Nick Tepesch suffered the loss.


Blue Jays Cruise Past Red Sox

(Toronto, Ontario) -- Dioner Navarro belted a two-run homer and Jose Reyes added a solo shot as the Blue Jays cruised to a 7-3 win over the Red Sox in the second of four games at Rogers Centre. Reyes and Melky Cabrera both had three hits, two RBI and scored a run for the Jays, who are 3-and-2 since the break.  J.A. Happ tossed six scoreless innings to improve to 8-5 with the win. Brett Cecil recorded the final out in the ninth for his fourth save. Stephen Drew hit a two-run homer in the ninth and David Ortiz hit a solo shot in the eighth for Boston, which had its five-game winning streak snapped. Jake Peavy fell to 1-9 after allowing five runs in six-and-a-third frames.


Indians Rock Twins

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Carlos Santana went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI to lead the Indians to an 8-2 win over the Twins at Target Field. Chris Dickerson and David Murphy each drove in a pair of runs and Nick Swisher went 3-for-4 as Cleveland snapped its two-game losing streak. Danny Salazar picked up the win after striking out six in five innings of one-run ball. Yohan Pino got hit for four runs in 6 1/3 innings to fall to 1-3 for the Twins, who have lost four of their first five after the All-Star break. Brian Dozier went 3-for-5 with a solo shot and Sam Fuld drove in a run in defeat.


Astros Edge Athletics In Extras

(Oakland, CA) -- L.J. Hoes hit a solo homer in the top of the 12th as the Astros tipped the Athletics 3-2 at The Coliseum. Chris Carter had a two-run single in the third as Houston won its second straight since a three-game slide. Brett Oberholtzer tossed seven innings of two-run ball, while Darin Downs got the win and Chad Qualls notched his 11th save. Scott Kazmir surrendered one earned run over seven frames for Oakland while Fernando Abad took the loss. Josh Donaldson and Jed Lowrie knocked in runs for the A's, who had won three of four.


Orioles Double Up Angels

(Anaheim, CA) -- Jonathan Schoop blasted a two-run homer as the Orioles took down the Angels 4-2 in Anaheim. J.J. Hardy added a pair of RBI doubles for Baltimore, which has won six of nine. Miguel Gonzalez improved to 5-5 after 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball while Zach Britton notched his 18th save. Third baseman Manny Machado was a late scratch with lower back tightness. Mike Trout's two-run homer in the eighth chased Gonzalez from the game. Hector Santiago pitched five scoreless innings while Mike Morin took the loss for Los Angeles. The Halos have lost three of four.


Diamondbacks Top Tigers Late

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Miguel Montero hit a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Diamondbacks past the Tigers 5-4 in the middle of a three-game series at Chase Field. Aaron Hill homered and knocked in three, while David Peralta had two triples and scored three times for the D'backs, who are 4-and-1 since the All-Star break. Eury De La Rosa picked up the win and Addison Reed earned his 24th save. Torii Hunter had a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the eighth for Detroit, which fell to 2-4 since the break. Phil Coke suffered the loss.


Mets Clip Mariners

(Seattle, WA) -- Jacob deGrom struck out seven in seven innings of one-run ball to lead the Mets to a 3-1 win over the Mariners at Safeco Field. deGrom improved to 4-5 with the win and Jenrry Mejia picked up his 12th save. Lucas Duda went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Travis d'Arnaud and Ruben Tejada batted in a run as New York snapped its three-game losing skid. Erasmo Ramirez took the tough loss after tossing seven innings of two-run ball for the Mariners, who have lost two of three.  Dustin Ackley went 2-for-3 and doubled in Seattle's lone run in the team's five-hit effort.
