Sale Leads White Sox Past Royals
(Chicago, IL) -- Chris Sale struck out eight over seven innings to help the White Sox beat the Royals 3-1 at U.S. Cellular Field. Sale improved to 9-1 after his one-run outing and Jake Petricka earned his fourth save. Adam Dunn plated two runs while Gordon Beckham added an RBI for Chicago, which has won three out of four. Jeremy Guthrie allowed three runs in six frames to fall to 5-9. Danny Valencia plated the lone run for the Royals, who have dropped all four games to start the second half of play.
Cardinals Begin Series With Rays
(St. Louis, MO) -- The Cardinals will send Adam Wainwright to the hill tonight against the Rays in a short two-game series. Lance Lynn will get the ball tomorrow night. St. Louis took two games from the Dodgers in their first series since the All-Star break and sit a half game behind the Brewers in the National League Central.
The "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" is reporting that Michael Wacha got good news from his MRT and C-T scan on Monday. It was the third test done on Wacha's right shoulder within the last month. The organization is hoping the 23-year-old can begin a throwing program in two weeks. Wacha is 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA but has not been on the mound for the Cardinals since June 17.
Cubs Open Series Against Padres
(Chicago, IL) -- The Cubs are back home to start a three-game series with the Padres tonight at Wrigley Field. Chicago sends Kyle Hendricks to the mound for his second start. He allowed four runs in six innings in his first outing. San Diego counter with Eric Stults. First pitch is set for 7:05.
Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo is being honored as the National League Player of the Week. Rizzo hit three homers over the weekend in Arizona, going 5-for-11 with 14 total bases in the three-game series. He's tied for the NL lead in homers with 23 this season.
Dodgers Top Pirates
(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Justin Turner plated two runs to help the Dodgers knock off the Pirates 5-2 at PNC Park. Adrian Gonzalez collected three hits including two doubles and an RBI in the win. Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier added an RBI each for the Dodgers, who have split decisions over the last four contests. Hyun-Jin Ryu improved to 11-5 after allowing two runs in seven innings and Kenley Jansen notched his 29th save. Edinson Volquez surrendered all the runs in 5 2/3 to fall to 8-7. Russell Martin and Jordy Mercer plated a run each for the Pirates, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Giants Edge Phillies
(Philadelphia, PA) -- Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer as the Giants beat the Phillies 7-4 at Citizens Bank Park. Hunter Pence added three hits and two RBI in the win and Buster Posey drove in two. Ryan Vogelsong was removed after allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits in three-plus innings. George Kontos grabbed the win in relief with Santiago Casilla earning his sixth save. San Francisco has won three of its last four. Cliff Lee was rocked for six runs on 12 hits in 5 2/3 to fall to 4-5. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard drove in two runs each in the loss. The Phillies have dropped three of four.
Marlins Drop Braves In 10
(Atlanta, GA) -- Garrett Jones hit a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Marlins to a 3-1 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Jarrod Saltalamacchia belted a solo shot in the fifth as Miami won its second straight. Tom Koehler struck out seven in six-and-two-thirds innings of one-run ball in no-decision. Bryan Morris improved to 7-0 with the win and Steve Cishek notched his 22nd save. Julio Teheran fanned 11 in seven innings for Atlanta and Shae Simmons took the loss. Chris Johnson drove in the lone run in defeat.
Brewers Clip Reds
(Milwaukee, WI) -- Ryan Braun went 2-for-4 with two RBI as the Brewers took down the Reds 5-2 at Miller Park. Jean Segura tallied a pair of hits and Carlos Gomez doubled in a run as Milwaukee snapped its two-game losing streak. Wily Peralta fanned five in seven innings of one-run ball to improve to 11-6 and Francisco Rodriguez notched his 29th save. Mat Latos took the loss after giving up four earned runs in seven innings for Cincinnati, which has lost four in-a-row following the All-Star break. Billy Hamilton and Kris Negron both blasted solo shots in the setback.
Nationals Cruise Past Rockies
(Denver, CO) -- Ian Desmond went 5-for-5 with a two-run homer and three runs as the Nationals handled the Rockies 7-2 at Coors Field. Danny Espinosa added two hits and two RBI for Washington, which has won three straight. Doug Fister gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings to improve to 9-2. Franklin Morales fell to 5-5 after throwing six innings and allowing four runs, three earned. Ben Paulsen was 2-for-4 with an RBI in his MLB debut while Nolan Arenado also knocked one in. Colorado has dropped six in-a-row.
Rangers Take Down Yankees
(Bronx, NY) -- Miles Mikolas earned his first win of the season as the Rangers beat the Yankees 4-2 at Yankee Stadium. Mikolas gave up two runs in seven-and-a-third innings and Joakim Soria earned his 17th save. Geovany Soto, Rougned Odor and Shin-Soo Choo plated a run each in the sixth for Texas, which has won two of its last four. Jacoby Ellsbury went deep and Carlos Beltran added the other RBI for New York. Shane Greene fell to 2-1 after allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings. The Yankees saw their three-game winning streak end.
Red Sox Throttle Blue Jays
(Toronto, Ontario) -- David Ortiz went deep twice and drove in four runs as the Red Sox destroyed the Blue Jays 14-1 at Rogers Centre. Stephen Drew drove in four runs and hit a three-run dinger in the win while Jackie Bradley Jr. and Christian Vasquez chipped in two RBI each. The Red Sox pounded out 18 hits in their fifth straight victory. John Lackey gave up one run over seven innings to improve to 11-6. Drew Hutchison was tagged for nine hits and six runs in 2 2/3 to fall to 6-9 while Brad Mills gave up eight runs in relief. Juan Francisco plated the lone run for Toronto, which has lost four of its last six.
Twins Clip Indians
(Minneapolis, MN) -- Josh Willingham belted a go-ahead solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Twins past the Indians 4-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Target Field. Kurt Suzuki went 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the second and Trevor Plouffe doubled in a run in the third for the Twins, who snapped a three-game skid. Casey Fien picked up the win after blowing the lead in the top of the eighth. Glen Perkins closed it out for his 23rd save. Roberto Perez tied the game at three with an RBI-single in the eighth for Cleveland, which is 3-2 since the break. Bryan Shaw fell to 4-2 with the loss.
Jones Powers Orioles Past Angels
(Anaheim, CA) -- Adam Jones hit a pair of two-run homers to account for all the Orioles offense in a 4-2 win over the Angels from Anaheim. Nick Markakis went 2-for-4 and scored twice as Baltimore won its fifth in eight games. Bud Norris improved to 8-and-6 after striking out eight and six-and-two-thirds innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Zach Britton notched his 17th save in the win. Matt Shoemaker struck out ten but fell to 7-3 after allowing four runs in five-and-two-thirds innings for Los Angeles. Hank Conger and Josh Hamilton each had two hits and an RBI while Mike Trout went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. The Halos had won seven of their previous eight.
Tigers Edge Diamondbacks
(Phoenix, AZ) -- Miguel Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Tigers edged the Diamondbacks 4-3 in the first of three at Chase Field. Torii Hunter hit a two-run homer and Austin Jackson added a solo shot for Detroit, which has won two in-a-row since a four-game skid. Justin Verlander allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings as he improved to 9-8 with the victory. Joe Nathan closed it out for his 20th save. Gerardo Parra belted a game-tying solo homer in the sixth for the D'backs, who swept the Cubs over the weekend. Miguel Montero and Mark Trumbo also each plated a run in defeat. Randall Delgado suffered the loss.
Mariners Down Mets
(Seattle, WA) -- Mike Zunino homered to back a solid outing from Roenis Elias as the Mariners defeated the Mets 5-2 in the opener of a three-game set at Safeco Field. Elias struck out eight over five-and-a-third innings of one-run ball as he evened his record at 8-8. Kyle Seager had two hits and drove in two, while Willie Bloomquist went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the M's, who are 2-and-2 since the break. David Wright plated a run and Juan Lagares scored the other run on a throwing error for New York, which has lost three in-a-row. Jonathon Niese permitted four runs in six frames as he dipped to 5-5.
