American Legion Effingham Junior Post 120 built an early lead against Teutopolis Post 924, scoring four runs in the first inning, en route to a 6-3 win on Saturday at Teutopolis High School in post-season tournament play.

Post 120 scored in the first on an RBI single by Bryar Jansen, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by James Kabbes. Lane Koenig did his best to jump start the offense for Effingham, reaching base three times. He scored one run and had one RBI. He singled in the second and fourth innings.

Kabbes got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed three runs over seven innings. He struck out five, walked five and surrendered six hits. Jason Kenter was the game's losing pitcher. He allowed six runs in six innings, walked three and struck out five.

Teutopolis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Post 924 got things going when Kenter singled. A passed ball then moved Kenter from first to second. A two-run second inning helped bring Teutopolis within one. An RBI single by Matt Goette and a sacrifice fly by Kenter triggered Post 924's comeback. Effingham stopped the rally after Kabbes got Brock Bueker to ground out.

Post 120 scored one run in the second inning, and then followed it up with one more in the sixth. In the second, Effingham scored on an RBI single by Koenig, bringing home Blake White.

Post 120 built an early edge Sunday, but Newton Post 20 roared back to steal a 7-5 victory. Newton Post 20 took the lead in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Brock Mammoser.

Tim Weber got the win in relief for Newton Post 20. Weber pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed no runs. Newton was sparked by Mammoser and Michael Carr, who teamed up for two hits and three RBIs.

Lane Koenig was charged with the loss. He allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings, walked nine and struck out 11. Newton Post 20 jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Post 120 survived Post 20's surge and put up two runs of its own in the first. Effingham scored two in the first and three in the third to take a five to one lead. Newton answered with three runs in the top of the fourth to get the game close.

The game was never in doubt after the sixth, as Post 20 scored three runs on a two-run double by Mammoser and a groundout by Mitchell Jansen.

Effingham is back in action today at 5:30 p.m. against Dieterich.
