Arrieta, Cubs Blank Red Sox

(Boston, MA) -- Jake Arrieta carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning and helped the Cubs blank the Red Sox 2-0 in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.  Stephen Drew broke up Arrieta's bid with a single.  Arrieta struck out ten in seven-and-two-thirds innings to improve to 5-1. Nate Schierholtz supplied the offense with a two-run homer in the fourth inning for Chicago, which has won three of its last five. Hector Rondon locked up his 10th save.  Boston only had two hits and Jake Peavy fell to 1-7 after allowing two runs in six innings. The Red Sox's two-game winning streak came to an end.

The Cubs and Red Sox do battle once again tonight in Boston. Chicago sends Edwin Jackson and his 5-8 record to the mound. The Red Sox counter with Clay Buchholz, who is 3-4. First pitch from Fenway Park is set for 6:10.

Cubs senior vice president of player development and amateur scouting Jason McLeod isn't going anywhere. He's withdrawn his name from consideration for the vacant general manager's job with the San Diego Padres. McLeod says he's humbled the Padres were interested in him.


Cardinals Travel To Take On Giants

(San Francisco, CA) --  fter a day off, the Cardinals are back in action tonight when they begin a three-game series with the Giants at AT&T Park. St. Louis hopes to avoid its third straight loss when southpaw Marco Gonzalez takes the mound. San Francisco will go with 6-5 Tim Lincecum opposite him. The first pitch is set for 9:15.

The Cardinals recalled right fielder Oscar Taveras from Triple-A Memphis yesterday.  averas made his major league debut earlier this season but was sent back to Memphis after batting .189 in 40 at-bats. The 22-year-old has dominated Triple-A ball this season however, batting .318 with eight homers and 49 RBI. To make room for Taveras, St. Louis optioned right-hander Jorge Rondon back to Memphis.


White Sox, Angels To Play Two Today

(Chicago, IL) -- The White Sox and Angels will play two today after last night's contest was postponed due to rain. Chicago sends Hector Noesi to the mound in the first game against Garrett Richards. First pitch is at 4:10. The nightcap features Scott Carroll going up against the Halos' Jered Weaver.

White Sox slugger Jose Abreu is growing tired of talk surrounding the Home Run Derby. Abreu tells ESPN he's not thinking about the Derby right now, only helping the Sox win. The rookie is in a three-way tie for the MLB lead in homers with 25 on the season.


Nationals Down Rockies

(Washington, DC) -- Ian Desmond's three-run double highlighted a five-run sixth inning as the Nationals defeated the Rockies 7-3 in the opener of a three-game series in DC. Adam LaRoche homered, while Ryan Zimmerman went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Nats, who have won three straight. Bryce Harper drove in a run in his return to the lineup. He was out since late April with a torn ligament in his left thumb. Jordan Zimmermann tossed six innings of two-run ball as he improved to 6-4 with the victory. Troy Tulowitzki doubled in a run and scored twice for Colorado, which has dropped 12 of 14. Yohan Flande allowed three runs in 5 1/3 frames to suffer his first career loss.


Braves Dump Mets Late

(Atlanta, GA) -- The Mets faltered in the eighth inning giving up four runs as they fell to the Braves, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Turner Field. Atlanta scored two runs on two of the three errors in the eighth and New York walked a run in. Freddie Freeman had two RBI and three walks, while reliever Anthony Varvaro earned his third win. Craig Kimbrel nailed down his 25th save with a perfect ninth. Atlanta has won five in-a-row and seven of eight. The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in each of the first three innings. Curtis Granderson hit a solo homer and Jeurys Familia took the loss.  New York has lost five of six.


Padres Blank Reds Despite One Hit

(San Diego, CA) -- The Padres had just one hit but it was enough in a 1-0 win over the Reds at Petco Park. Tommy Medica singled in the second, but it was his walk in the fifth that led to a run. Everth Cabrera drove Medica in during the fifth on a sacrifice fly as San Diego won its second straight following a three-game slide. Jesse Hahn lasted just five innings but scattered three hits and struck out nine to improve to 4-1. Three relievers bridged the gap to Huston Street, who notched his 22nd save for the Friars. Mat Latos fell to 1-1 after pitching seven innings and allowing the lone run for Cincinnati. Devin Mesoraco doubled and Todd Frazier reached base twice for the Reds, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.


Orioles Bash Four Homers, Crush Rangers

(Baltimore, MD) -- The Orioles crushed four home runs on their way to a 7-1 win over the Rangers at Camden Yards.  Steve Pearce connected on a pair of two-run shots while Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy each had two hits and a solo homer for Baltimore. Ubaldo Jimenez improved to 3-8 while tossing eight innings and allowing an unearned run with seven strikeouts. The O's had lost three of four.  Joe Saunders remains winless after giving up seven runs in five innings for Texas. Robinson Chirinos and Adrian Beltre each doubled for the Rangers, who have lost 10 of their last 12 games.


Davis Blasts Tigers Past Athletics

(Detroit, MI) -- Down 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Rajai Davis belted a walk-off grand slam off Sean Doolittle to lift the Tigers to a 5-4 win over the A's at Comerica Park.  Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a solo shot for Detroit, which has won two of three. Blaine Hardy improved to 1-1 with the win in relief. Doolittle fell to 1-3 after Scott Kazmir struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. Jed Lowrie went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Brandon Moss drove in a run as Oakland saw a four-game winning streak come to an end.


Rays Edge Yankees In 12

(Bronx, NY) -- Logan Forsythe singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning as the Rays edged the Yankees 4-3 in the opener of a three-game series in the Bronx. Matt Joyce and Kevin Kiermaier both homered in Tampa's third straight win. Ryan Hanigan's RBI single in the eighth had given the Rays a 3-2 lead before Brian Roberts hit a game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter also plated a run each for the Yankees, who have dropped three in-a-row and seven of their last nine. Brad Boxberger tossed the final two innings to pick up his first career win. Jose Ramirez took the loss.


Escobar Powers Royals Past Twins

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Alcides Escobar went 2-for-4 with four RBI as the Royals cruised to a 6-1 win over the Twins at Target Field. Salvador Perez also went 2-for-4 and hit a solo homer as Kansas City won its third in four games. Danny Duffy allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings, improving to 5-7 for the Royals. Yohan Pino gave up four runs over 5 2/3 frames for Minnesota, falling to 0-2. Eduardo Nunez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Twins, who have dropped six of their last seven.


Mariners Roll Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Robinson Cano went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer as the Mariners rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Mike Zunino went deep and notched three RBI and Michael Saunders belted a two-run shot for Seattle, which has won three of four. Brad Miller also homered in the victory. Taijuan Walker struck out six and gave up three runs in six frames of work to win his first start of the season. Tom Wilhelmsen notched the save. Collin McHugh fanned eight batters but surrendered five runs in six innings to fall to 4-7 for the Astros, who have lost two of three. George Springer and Marwin Gonzalez left the yard in defeat.


Haren Dazzles As Dodgers Blank Indians

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Dan Haren allowed one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings as the Dodgers shut out the Indians 1-0 at Chavez Ravine. Haren improved to 8-4 while striking out five and Kenley Jansen notched his 25th save. Clint Robinson delivered a pinch-hit RBI infield single in the seventh to account for the lone run of the game. Los Angeles has won three straight and six of its last seven. Michael Bourn had the lone hit for Cleveland while Corey Kluber fell to 7-6 despite 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball. The Indians have lost three of their last four.
