Cubs Clip Marlins In 13 Innings

(Miami, FL) -- Pitcher Travis Wood's pinch-hit RBI double scored Junior Lake in the 13th inning helping the Cubs clip the Marlins 5-4 in Miami. Each team used eight pitchers in the marathon. Starlin Castro hit a three-run homer for Chicago, which has won three out of four. Carlos Villanueva pitched two innings of relief to pick up the win, while James Russell recorded his first save. Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer and Casey McGehee finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and three walks. Jacob Turner took the loss in relief for Miami, which has lost four out of five.

The Cubs continue their three-game series with the Marlins tonight. Chicago sends Jeff Samardzija and his 2-6 record to the hill. Miami counters with Anthony DeSclafani, who is 1-1 this year. First pitch from Marlins Park is scheduled for 6:10.

The Cubs are making it known that they have pitching to trade. Jon Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the Cubs have been talking to teams about Jeff Samardzija, Jason Hammel, Edwin Jackson and Jake Arrieta. The trade deadline is July 31.


Cardinals Top Mets

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Cardinals used a four-run fifth inning to help lift them to a 6-2 win over the Mets at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig and Matt Adams each drove in two runs for St. Louis, which extended its winning streak to four games. Reliever Nick Greenwood allowed one run in three-and-a-third innings to pick up the win in his big league debut and Seth Maness notched his first save. Jacob DeGrom surrendered six runs off 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings to fall to 0-4 for the Mets. Chris Young and Curtis Granderson each knocked in a run in defeat.

The Cardinals continue their three-game series against the New York Mets tonight at Busch Stadium. Michael Wacha looks to even his record for the Redbirds.  He is 4-5 with a 2.88 ERA in 14 starts. The Mets will counter with left-hander Jonathon Niese, who is 3-3 with a 2.54 ERA.


White Sox Open Set With Giants

(Chicago, IL) -- The White Sox start a brief two-game series with the San Francisco Giants tonight at U.S. Cellular Field. Chicago sends John Danks and his 5-5 record to the mound. The Giants counter with Matt Cain, who is 1-4. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10.


Five-Run 13th Lifts Phillies Past Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Ryan Howard homered and drove in the go-ahead run during a five-run 13th inning as the Phillies beat the Braves 6-1 in the opener of a three-game series at Turner Field. Reid Brignac hit a two-run triple to cap the big inning for Philadelphia, which has won five of its last seven. Antonio Bastardo picked up the win. Alfredo Simmons drove in the lone run in the bottom of the ninth for the Braves, who have dropped four of six. David Hale suffered the loss.


Brewers Blast Diamondbacks Late

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Aramis Ramirez's two-run double broke a three-all tie in the eighth inning as the Brewers went on to beat the Diamondbacks 9-3 in the first of four at Chase Field. Ryan Braun added a two-run triple in the ninth for Milwaukee, which has won four of its last six. Scooter Gennett homered and drove in two, while Khris Davis also plated a pair of runs in the victory. Wily Peralta pitched seven innings of three-run ball as he improved to 7-5. Starter Brandon McCarthy hit a two-run single and Roger Kieschnick singled in the other run for the D'backs, who have dropped five of six. On the mound, McCarthy allowed three runs in seven frames but did not factor in the decision. Will Harris suffered the loss.


Dodgers Trounce Rockies

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Matt Kemp drove in two runs to help guide the Dodgers to a 6-1 win over the Rockies in Los Angeles. Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez each also drove in a run for Los Angeles, which has won three of four. Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out six batters in six innings of one-run ball to improve to 8-3 on the season. Tyler Matzek took the loss for Colorado after allowing three runs off 10 hits in five innings of work. Wilin Rosario hit a solo homer in the fourth to tag on the only run for the Rockies, who saw a five-game winning streak come to an end.


Indians Edge Angels

(Cleveland, OH) -- Carlos Santana broke a tie with a solo homer in the fourth and the Indians held on for a 4-3 victory over the Angels at Progressive Field. Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first for Cleveland while Michael Brantley knocked in a run in the third. Trevor Bauer improved to 2-3 after allowing three runs in six-and-two-thirds innings. Carlos Carrasco pitched the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save as the Indians won their third straight. Jered Weaver fell to 7-6 after allowing four runs in six frames for Los Angeles. Chris Iannetta went 2-for-4 with a two-run double as the Angels dropped their fourth in five games.


Royals Light Up Tigers

(Detroit, MI) -- Justin Verlander's season long struggles continued as he was lit up in the Tigers' 11-8 loss to the Royals in the opener of a four-game set at Comerica Park. Verlander allowed seven runs on 12 hits in six innings to raise his ERA to 4.98. Omar Infante hit a three-run homer off the former Cy Young winner and drove in four. Billy Butler was 2-for-4 with three RBI for Kansas City, which pulled to within a half-game of Detroit for first place in the AL Central. Jason Vargas improved to 7-2, dealing seven innings of two-run ball. The Tigers made the game closer than it seemed when J.D. Martinez launched a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth.


Rays Hold Off Orioles

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Jerry Sands hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer off Brian Matusz in the eighth and the Rays held on for a 5-4 victory over the Orioles at Tropicana Field. Ryan Hanigan also hit a two-run blast while Yunel Escobar added a solo shot as Tampa Bay won its fourth in five games. Jake McGee was credited with the win and despite allowing a solo homer to Delmon Young in the ninth, Juan Carlos Oviedo notched his first save. Adam Jones lifted a two-run homer for the O's while Nelson Cruz tied the game at three with an RBI infield single in the eighth. Darren O'Day was charged with the loss for Baltimore, which has lost three out of four.


Red Sox Blank Twins

(Boston, MA) -- A.J. Pierzynski lifted a sac-fly in the fifth as the Red Sox held on for a 1-0 win over the Twins at Fenway Park. Rubby De La Rosa allowed one hit and three walks over seven innings to improve to 2-2 while Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his 15th save. Boston had lost three of its previous five. Kevin Correia allowed the run over six frames and fell to 3-8 for Minnesota. Sam Fuld managed a double for one of three hits for the Twins, who have lost three straight.


Rangers Rock Athletics

(Oakland, CA) -- Donnie Murphy and Robinson Chirinos each tallied a home run and three RBI as the Rangers crushed the A's 14-8 at the O.co Coliseum. Michael Choice hit a two-run homer and Adrian Beltre drove in three runs for Texas, which has won four of five. Colby Lewis got the win giving up five runs in five-and-a-third innings. Drew Pomeranz took the loss getting rocked for seven earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings for Oakland, which had won three of four entering the game. Yoenis Cespedes went deep and drove in four runs and Brandon Moss hit a solo shot in the loss.
