Cubs Blank Phillies, Take Series

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Anthony Rizzo hit his 14th homer of the year to back a superb outing by Travis Wood as the Cubs blanked the Phillies 3-0 at Citizens Bank Park. Wood took a no-hitter into the sixth and tossed eight innings of three-hit ball to improve to 7-5 as Chicago took two out of three in the weekend series. Starlin Castro added an RBI single and scored on a double from Nate Schierholtz later in the game. Neil Ramirez pitched the final inning for his third save for the Cubs, who have still lost five of eight overall. A.J. Burnett allowed three runs over eight frames, falling to 4-6 for Philadelphia. Ben Revere had a hit and a walk for the Phils, who have still won four of their last six.

The Cubs continue their 10-game road trip tonight in Miami against the Marlins. Chicago has lost five of its last eight to slip to 28-39 on the season. The Cubs took two of three from Philadelphia last series. Jason Hammel toes the rubber tonight against Tom Koehler of the Fish.


Cardinals Get By Nationals, Complete Sweep

(St. Louis, MO) -- Jaime Garcia tossed seven innings of one-run ball as the Cardinals dropped the Nationals 5-2 to complete a three-game sweep at Busch Stadium. Garcia improved to 3-0 while Trevor Rosenthal recorded the final out to earn his 20th save. Matt Adams hit a two-run homer and Matt Holliday added a solo shot and drove in two for St. Louis, which has won six out of seven. Adam LaRoche and Jayson Werth each drove in a run for Washington in defeat. Doug Fister fell to 5-2 after allowing four runs in six frames as the Nats lost their fourth straight overall since a four-game win streak.

The Cardinals continue their 10-game homestand tonight with the first of three games against the New York Mets. Flamethrower Carlos Martinez will start the game for the injured Adam Wainwright. He's expected to throw 50 to 60 pitches. Jacob deGrom toes the rubber for the Mets.


Royals Double Up White Sox

(Chicago, IL  -- Salvador Perez went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer as the Royals topped the White Sox 6-3 at U.S. Cellular Field. Eric Hosmer added a two-run shot for Kansas City while Jarrod Dyson also knocked in a run. James Shields tossed six innings of three-run ball to improve to 8-3 while Greg Holland earned his 20th save. The Royals have won seven straight. Andre Rienzo fell to 4-4 after allowing six runs in as many innings for Chicago. Adam Eaton went 3-for-4 while Alejandro De Aza drove in two in defeat. The White Sox have dropped four in-a-row.


Marlins Get Walk-Off Win Over Pirates

(Miami, FL) -- Casey McGehee lifted a sac-fly in the bottom of the tenth to send the Marlins to a 3-2 walk-off win over the Pirates in Miami. McGehee finished 3-for-4 and tied the game with a two-run double in the eighth. Henderson Alvarez allowed two runs in seven innings while A.J. Ramos picked up the win in relief as the Marlins ended a three-game slide. Vance Worley blanked Miami over seven innings in the start for Pittsburgh before Tony Watson blew the save and Jared Hughes took the loss. Starlin Marte doubled in a run and Josh Harrison knocked one in for the Pirates, who saw a four-game win streak end.


Mets Hold Off Padres

(Flushing, NY) -- Curtis Granderson hit a leadoff homer for the Mets, who went on to a 3-1 victory over the Padres at Citi Field. Bobby Abreu added an RBI double while Daniel Murphy had a sac-fly for New York, which has won two of three since dropping eight out of nine. Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched an inning before leaving with an upset stomach. Carlos Torres allowed one run over four innings for the victory while Jenrry Mejia recorded the final six outs for his seventh save.  Ian Kennedy gave up three runs in five-and-a-third innings to fall to 5-8 for San Diego. Rene Rivera knocked in the lone run for the Padres, who have lost six out of seven.


Reds Blow Out Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer and drove in four as the Reds cruised to a 13-4 win over the Brewers at Miller Park. Billy Hamilton went 3-for-6 with a solo homer and two RBI while Brandon Phillips connected on a two-run homer and finished with three RBI for Cincinnati. Mike Leake pitched five innings and allowed four runs to improve to 4-6 as the Reds won their fourth in five games. Marco Estrada gave up five runs in five innings and fell to 5-4 for Milwaukee. Jonathan Lucroy drilled a solo shot for the Brewers, who have still won five of eight despite the loss.


Rockies Pull Past Giants

(San Francisco, CA) -- The Rockies completed a three-game sweep of the Giants using a four-run eighth inning to catapult themselves to an 8-7 victory at AT&T Park. Justin Morneau's two-run double gave Colorado the lead and Drew Stubbs' RBI triple got the rally going. The Rockies pulled to within one-game of .500 at 34-35. Troy Tulowitzki was 3-for-4 with his 18th homer, two RBI and two runs scored, while reliever Matt Belisle grabbed the win. LaTroy Hawkins earned his 14th save. Hector Sanchez, Pablo Sandoval and pitcher Madison Bumgarner each hit a solo homer. Bumgarner wasn't apart of the decision.  Reliever Juan Gutierrez took the loss. San Francisco sits at 43-27.


Diamondbacks Double Up Dodgers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to help the Diamondbacks to a 6-3 win over the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Paul Goldschmidt also went deep, and Martin Prado drove in a run for Arizona, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Bronson Arroyo pitched five innings of one-run ball to improve to 7-4 on the season. Josh Beckett gave up three earned runs in seven innings of work to fall to 4-4. Hanley Ramirez and Jamie Romak each drove in a run for the Dodgers in defeat.


Martinez Sends Tigers Past Twins

(Detroit, MI) -- J.D. Martinez lifted a sac-fly in the bottom of the ninth to send the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Twins at Comerica Park. Oswaldo Arcia's error one play before allowed Torii Hunter to get to third base and eventually score the winning run. Nick Castellanos drove in two while Victor Martinez doubled in a run for Detroit, which has won three out of four. Rick Porcello pitched seven innings of three-run ball while Joe Nathan picked up the win. Josh Willingham and Kendrys Morales each knocked in a run for Minnesota, which has dropped two straight since a three-game win streak. Ricky Nolasco allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings while Casey Fien took the loss.


Indians Top Red Sox In 11

(Boston, MA) -- Nick Swisher hit a homer in the top of the 11th inning to power the Indians to a 3-2 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Michael Brantley also went deep for Cleveland, which won the final two of the four-game series. Cody Allen picked up his third win out of the bullpen. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz each drove in a run for Boston. Junichi Tazawa took the loss in relief.


Price Deals Rays Past Astros

(Houston, TX) -- David Price struck out 10 in eight innings of work to help guide the Rays to a 4-3 win over the Astros at Minute Maid Park. Price improved to 5-6 with the win, and Jake McGee picked up the save. Yunel Escobar drove in two runs while Jerry Sands batted in the go-ahead run in the eighth for the Rays, who have won three of four. Jerome Williams took the loss for the Astros after giving up two runs in two frames. Dexter Fowler and Matt Dominguez each hit solo shots in defeat.


Athletics Roll Yankees

(Oakland, CA) -- Derek Norris and Coco Crisp each hit a three-run homer to power the Athletics to a 10-5 win over the Yankees in Oakland. Yoenis Cespedes knocked in two runs for Oakland, which has won three of four. Jesse Chavez allowed a run over six innings for his sixth win. Carlos Beltran and Brett Gardner each went deep for New York, which won the first game of this three-game series. Vidal Nuno took the loss after giving up eight runs in three-plus frames.


Seager Drives Mariners Past Rangers

(Seattle, WA) -- Kyle Seager was a perfect 4-for-4 and drove in three runs for Seattle as the Mariners beat the Rangers 5-1 at Safeco Field. Seager doubled twice to help Seattle end their five-game skid, while Dustin Ackley and Brad Miller picked up an RBI each. Hisashi Iwakuma gave up one run through eight innings to improve to 5-3. Nick Martinez took the loss for Texas and fell to 1-4 with six frames of two-run ball. Brad Snyder went deep and collected two hits in the loss as Texas ends their win steak at three games.


Braves Beat Angels

(Atlanta, GA) -- Tommy La Stella was 3-for-3 with two RBI to help the Braves beat the Angels 7-3 from Turner Field. Jason Heyward hit a solo homer for Atlanta, which took two of three in the series. Justin Upton and Evan Gattis also knocked in a run for the Braves. Mike Minor allowed three runs in five innings while Anthony Varvaro picked up the win. Craig Kimbrel locked up his 20th save. Erick Aybar and Mike Trout each went deep for Los Angeles, which has lost three of four. Hector Santiago gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings for the loss.
