Cardinals Clip Royals In 11th

(Kansas City, MO) -- Matt Carpenter doubled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning as the Cardinals went on to beat the Royals 5-2 in the I-70 series at Kauffman Stadium. Allen Craig added a two-run single later in the 11th for the Redbirds, who snapped a three-game skid. Carpenter finished 5-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in the victory. Sam Freeman picked up the win and Pat Neshek earned his first save. Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain plated a run each in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game for the Royals, who won the first two of this four-game home-and-home series in St. Louis.  Kelvin Herrera suffered the loss.


Cubs Edge Mets

(Chicago, IL) -- Starlin Castro went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Cubs clipped the Mets 5-4 in the middle of a three-game series at Wrigley Field. Nate Schierholtz also plated a run for the Northsiders, who will go for the three-game sweep on Thursday. Edwin Jackson permitted four runs, just one earned, in five innings as he improved to 4-5 with the win. Hector Rondon closed it out for his seventh save. Ruben Tejada homered and Lucas Duda hit a two-run double for New York, which had won six-of-seven before this series. Dana Eveland suffered his first loss.

The Cubs will have a new home next season. WGN-AM 720 has broadcast Cubs games for 90 years, but executives of the radio station said a new deal could not be agreed upon after lengthy talks. The "Chicago Tribune" reports the team will move to WBBM-AM 780 for about $10-million. WGN began broadcasting Cubs games in 1924 and became the exclusive home to the Cubs in 1958.


Ex-Cub Zimmer Passes Away

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Former Major League player, manager and coach Don Zimmer is dead.  Zimmer's son, Tom, told the "Tampa Bay Times" the 83-year-old "went peacefully" in a Florida hospital. Zimmer underwent heart surgery on April 16, and he had been hospitalized ever since. He had been involved in professional baseball since 1949. "Zim" played with the Cubs in 1960 and 61. He was 265-and-258 as the Cubs' manager from 1988-91.


White Sox Drop Dodgers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Adam Dunn hit the game-winning home run in the fourth to lift the White Sox to a 2-1 win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Leury Garcia also went deep for Chicago, which has won three of four. John Danks gave up a run over 7 1/3 innings for his fourth win. Ronald Belisario locked up his fifth save.  Hanley Ramirez knocked in the only run in the eighth for Los Angeles, which has lost three of its last four games. Josh Beckett gave up two runs in six innings for the loss.


Sox Selecting Third, Cubs Fourth, Cards Pick Twice

(Secaucus, NJ) -- The Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft begins tonight. The White Sox are selecting third overall, and the Cubs are picking fourth in the first round. The Houston Astros have the number-one pick for the third straight season.

Padres Down Pirates Despite One Hit

(San Diego, CA) -- The Padres were able to pull out a 3-2 win over the Pirates at Petco Park despite only having one hit. San Diego did walk nine times as it avoided being swept in the three-game series. Chris Denorfia and Carlos Quentin each had an RBI, while Ian Kennedy picked up his fifth win. Kennedy struck out seven over six innings of two-run ball. Everth Cabrera had the only hit for the Padres, who are 27-33. Francisco Liriano walked six of the nine batters as he fell to 1-3. Liriano allowed three runs, only two of which were earned. Andrew McCutchen hit a solo homer for Pittsburgh, which sits at 28-31.


Strasburg, Nationals Double Up Phillies

(Washington, DC) -- Anthony Rendon homered and drove in three as the Nationals doubled up the Phillies 8-4 in the middle of a three-game series in DC. Danny Espinosa had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Nats, who have won four-of-five. Denard Span doubled twice and also drove in two in the victory.  Stephen Strasburg struck out 11 while giving up four runs, two earned, in seven innings as he improved to 5-4. John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run homer for the Phils, who have dropped a season-high five in-a-row. A.J. Burnett was rocked for eight runs in six frames as he dipped to 3-and-5.


Giants Edge Reds

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Juan Perez belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning as the Giants edged the Reds 3-2 in the middle of a three-game set at Great American Ball Park. Michael Morse hit a solo shot earlier in the sixth for San Francisco, which has won six of eight. Ryan Vogelsong struck out nine over six-and-a-third innings of two-run ball as he improved to 4-2. Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save. Todd Frazier homered and Jay Bruce doubled in the other run for the Reds, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Tony Cingrani fanned seven in 5 2/3 frames, but allowed all three runs to fall to 2-6.

 

Diamondbacks Outslug Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- The Diamondbacks put up 11 runs over the final two innings en route to a 16-8 win over the Rockies at Coors Field.  Didi Gregorius started the scoring with a solo homer to leadoff the game, while Miguel Montero capped the big night with a three-run blast during a five-run ninth. Montero drove in six runs, while Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, four RBI and three runs scored for Arizona, which has won the first two of the three-game series. Brad Ziegler picked up the win. Michael Cuddyer, Troy Tulowitzki and Drew Stubbs drove in two runs apiece for the Rockies, who have dropped six straight and 10 of their last 12 overall. Rex Brothers suffered the loss. Starter Jordan Lyles suffered a broken hand.


Indians Walk Off Red Sox

(Cleveland, OH) -- Asdrubal Cabrera drove a three-run walk-off home run out of Progressive Field in the 12th inning to lift the Indians to a 7-4 win over the Red Sox. David Murphy drove in two runs in the sixth while Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis each notched an RBI for Cleveland, which has won six in-a-row.  Carlos Carrasco struck out four batters for his first win in relief. Edward Mujica surrendered the walk-off homer to fall to 2-2 for the Red Sox, who won seven straight before being swept by the Tribe. David Ortiz launched a two-run shot in the sixth, and Brock Holt also drove in two runs.


Athletics Top Yankees

(Bronx, NY) -- Josh Donaldson broke a four-all tie with a solo homer in the seventh as the Athletics held on for a 7-4 win against the Yankees in New York.  Donaldson ended 3-for-5 with two runs for the A's. Yoenis Cespedes hit a pair of homers and finished 3-for-5 for Oakland, which has won five in-a-row. Jesse Chavez allowed four runs in six innings for the win.  Sean Doolittle picked up his seventh save. Vidal Nuno allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings for a no decision.  Jose Ramirez took the loss. Jacoby Ellsbury smacked a three-run homer for New York, which has lost four straight.


Orioles Clip Rangers

(Arlington, TX) -- Nick Markakis and Chris Davis each hit solo homers to help lead the Orioles past the Rangers 6-5 at Globe Life Park. Adam Jones went 2-for-5 with two RBI while J.J. Hardy drove in a run off a sac-fly for Baltimore, which has won four straight. Bud Norris improved to 4-5 after five innings of work and Zach Britton picked up his fifth save for the O's. Nick Martinez allowed six runs in five-and-a-third frames to fall to 1-2 for Texas, which has dropped four of five. Adrian Beltre hit two homers and drove in all of the Rangers' runs.


Angels Blank Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Garrett Richards tossed eight scoreless innings to power the Angels to a 4-0 win over the Astros in Houston. Richards improved to 5-2 while striking out nine. David Freese went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Los Angeles, which snapped a four-game slide. Erick Aybar also scored and drove in a run in the win. Jarred Cosart gave up three runs and struck out eight in six-and-two-thirds innings for the loss. Cosart is 4-5. Houston has lost three of four.


Mariners Blank Braves To Sweep Two-Game Set

(Atlanta, GA) -- Hisashi Iwakuma combined with two relievers on a six-hitter as the Mariners blanked the Braves 2-0 at Turner Field. Iwakuma struck out seven while allowing six hits and no walks in seven innings of work for his fourth win. Fernando Rodney got the final three outs for his 16th save as Seattle swept the two-game set in Atlanta. Cole Gillespie singled in a run in the fourth and Kyle Seager had a run-scoring single in the eighth for the M's, who have won five straight. Mike Minor fanned 10 over seven innings of one-run ball, but fell to 2-4 with the tough-luck loss.


Marlins Hold Off Rays

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Donovan Solano's three-run homer in the fourth inning powered the Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Rays in the first of two at Tropicana Field. It was Solano's first home run of the season. Casey McGehee drove in a run, while Giancarlo Stanton and two hits and scored twice for Miami, which pulled to within a half-game of the Braves for first place in the National League East. TOm Koehler evened up his record at five and Steve Cishek nailed down his 13th save. Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria each hit solo shots in the loss.  David Price dropped to 4-and-5 giving five runs, one earned in seven-and-one-third innings. Price struck out 11. Tampa Bay has lost nine straight.


Twins Down Brewers

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Oswaldo Arcia hit a home run, notched four RBI and singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to power the Twins past the Brewers 6-4 at Target Field. Trevor Plouffe and Josh Willingham also batted in runs for Minnesota, which has won three of four. Ricky Nolasco stuck out seven in seven innings while surrendering four runs for the win. Rob Wooten fell to 1-3 in the loss for the Brewers, who have lost three of five. Aramis Ramirez belted a three-run homer in his return from the disabled list and Mark Reynolds also drove in a run.
