Cubs Earn Walk-Off Over Mets

(Chicago, IL) -- Nate Schierholtz singled in Anthony Rizzo in the ninth as the Cubs rallied for a 2-1 win over the Mets at Wrigley Field. Schierholtz finished 3-for-4 while Chris Coghlan tied the game with a solo homer in the eighth inning. Hector Rondon earned the win in relief for Chicago, which had dropped four of its last five.  Curtis Granderson went 3-for-3 and drove in New York's lone run on a sac-fly in the first. Zack Wheeler pitched 6 2/3 scoreless for the Mets while Scott Rice took the loss. The loss ends a three-game win streak for the Mets.

The Cubs made some roster moves yesterday. Pitcher Hector Rondon was activated from the paternity list. Catcher Eli Whiteside had his contract selected from Triple-A Iowa. Welington Castillo hit the 15-day disabled list with a rib injury and reliever Jose Veras was DFA'ed.

The Cubs and Mets continue their three-game series from Wrigley Field tonight. Chicago sends Edwin Jackson and his 3-5 record to the hill. New York counters with Daisuke Matsuzaka, who is 2-0. First pitch is set for 7:05.


Royals Rally Past Cardinals

(St. Louis, MO) --  Eric Hosmer singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning as the Royals rallied past the Cardinals 8-7 at Busch Stadium.  Alcides Escobar plated the tying run in the eighth on an infield single for KC. He also tripled home a run and scored during a six-run fifth. Alex Gordon clubbed a three-run homer to cap the big fifth inning for the Royals, who have won the first two in the four-game home-and-home series. Wade Davis picked up the win with his 13th straight scoreless appearance and Greg Holland posted his 16th save. Kolten Wong smacked a grand slam in the second, while Peter Bourjos hit a solo shot in the sixth to give the Cards a 7-6 lead. Trevor Rosenthal fell to 0-3 with the loss. The Redbirds have dropped three in-a-row and six of their last seven overall. The teams now head to Kansas City for two games.

After two games in St. Louis, the Cardinals and Royals will play the first of two tonight at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Adam Wainwright aims for his ninth win of the year. He's 8-3 with a 2.32 ERA in 12 starts. KC will counter with left-hander Jason Vargas, who is 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina is the leader among National League catchers in voting for next month's All-Star Game. Molina has just over 1.2-million votes. He's well over 400,000 votes ahead of San Francisco's Buster Posey. Voting ends July 3. This year's Midsummer Classic will be played July 15th at Target Field in Minnesota.


Abreu Homers Again As White Sox Drop Dodgers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Jose Abreu went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI as the White Sox notched a 4-1 win over the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. It was Abreu's 17th homer of the season and his second in as many games since returning from the disabled list. Tyler Flowers also went deep for Chicago, which had lost three of four. Hector Noesi pitched six innings of one-run ball to move to 1-4 while Ronald Belisario notched his fourth save. Dan Haren allowed four runs over six frames to fall to 5-4 for Los Angeles. Yasiel Puig and Drew Butera each had two hits while Dee Gordon knocked in a run as the Dodgers lost their fifth in seven games.

The White Sox and Dodgers play the rubber match of their three-game series tonight in Los Angeles. Chicago sends John Danks and his 3-5 record to the mound. The Dodgers counter with Josh Beckett, who is 3-2. First pitch is set for 9:10.


Nationals Shut Out Phillies

(Washington, DC) -- Jordan Zimmermann tossed eight innings of five-hit ball as the Nationals blanked the Phillies 7-0 in DC. Zimmermann improved to 4-2 while Anthony Rendon hit a two-run homer.  Ian Desmond added a solo shot while Jayson Werth knocked in two as Washington won its third in four games. Denard Span finished 3-for-5 with three runs in the victory. David Buchanan allowed all seven runs over six frames to fall to 1-2 for Philadelphia. Jimmy Rollins reached base twice for the Phils, who have lost four straight.


Reds Bounce Giants

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce and Devin Mesoraco each had two RBI to help the Reds sink the Giants, 8-3, in the opener of a three-game set at the Great American Ball Park. Mesoraco hit his ninth homer of the season as Cincinnati won its season-high fourth straight game. Homer Bailey improved to 6-3, dealing six innings of three-run ball with seven strikeouts. Hunter Pence had three hits and connected for a long ball in defeat. Tim Lincecum was lit up for eight runs and didn't make it out of the fifth inning to take the loss. San Francisco has lost two of three.


Diamondbacks Double Up Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Nick Evans and Chris Owings hit back-to-back homers during a three-run fourth inning as the Diamondbacks doubled up the Rockies 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Coors Field. It was Evans' first homer since September, 2011. Owings also doubled in a run and finished a single short of the cycle for Arizona, which snapped a three-game skid.  Rookie Chase Anderson tossed six innings of one-run ball to improve to 4-0 in four starts to begin his career. Addison Reed gave up a solo homer to Troy Tulowitzki in the ninth but held on for his 15th save. DJ LeMahieu also went deep for the Rockies, who have lost five straight and nine of their last 11 overall. Carlos Gonzalez left in the sixth inning with inflammation in his left index finger.  Jorge De La Rosa allowed three runs in seven frames to fall to 6-4 with the loss.


Pirates Sink Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- The Pirates used a pair of two-run homers to push past the Padres 4-1 at Petco Park. Josh Harrison and Pedro Alvarez each hit their 11th homer of the season for Pittsburgh, which has won five of six. Gerrit Cole struck out six in 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball for his sixth win and Jason Grilli notched his ninth save. Jesse Hahn lost his major league debut after he surrendered four runs in less than four frames. Yonder Alonso drove in the lone run in the sixth for San Diego, which has lost three straight.


Indians Edge Red Sox

(Cleveland, OH) -- Michael Bourn hit a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning to lift the Indians past the Red Sox 5-3 in the middle of a three-game series at Progressive Field. Michael Brantley and Lonnie Chisenhall plated a run each during a three-run first inning for the Tribe, which has won five in-a-row including the first two in this series. Nick Hagadone picked up his first win of the year and Cody Allen recorded the final four outs for his fifth save.  Xander Bogaerts homered and scored twice, while Jonathan Herrera and Dustin Pedroia both had two hits and an RBI for Boston, which has lost two straight since a seven-game winning streak. Jake Peavy allowed all five runs in 6 2/3 frames as he dipped to 1-3.


Athletics Crack Yankees In 10th

(Bronx, NY) -- The Yankees bullpen faltered allowing a run in the eighth and three in the tenth to give the Athletics a 5-2 win in the opener of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium. Brandon Moss hit a go-ahead homer in the 10th off of Adam Warren, while Dellin Betances allowed a one-run double to Stephen Vogt two innings earlier that tied the game. Moss had two solo shots to give him 15 homers on the season. Reliever Dan Otero grabbed the win and Sean Doolittle locked up his sixth save. Oakland has won four straight. Warren fell to 1-3. Mark Teixeira drove in both New York runs including a solo homer. The Yankees fell a half-game behind Baltimore for second-place in the AL East with their third loss in-a-row.


Cruz's Blast Helps Orioles Past Rangers

(Arlington, TX) -- Nelson Cruz broke open a tight game in the eighth with a three-run homer against his former team as the Orioles downed the Rangers 8-3 in Arlington.  It was Cruz's MLB-leading 21st homer of the season. Caleb Joseph broke a 2-all tie with an RBI double while reaching base three times. Nick Markakis went 3-for-6 with an RBI while Adam Jones finished 4-for-5 with a solo blast as Baltimore won its third straight since a four-game losing streak.  Brian Matusz was credited with the win. Adrian Beltre and Robinson Chirinos each hit solo homers for Texas, which has lost three of four. Joe Saunders pitched six innings of two-run ball for the Rangers but Alexi Ogando was charged with the loss.


Singleton Homers In Debut As Astros Drop Angels

(Houston, TX) -- Jon Singleton homered in his first career game as the Astros dropped the Angels 7-2 at Minute Maid Park. Singleton finished with two RBI while Chris Carter also went deep for Houston. Jason Castro ripped a two-run single in the win as the 'Stros won their eighth in ten games. Collin McHugh pitched five two-hit innings to improve to 4-3. C.J. Wilson was tagged for five runs in 2 2/3 innings and fell to 6-5 for Los Angeles. Josh Hamilton made his return to the Halos lineup from the disabled list and hit a solo homer, as did Collin Cowgill. Mike Trout's back injury flared up and he left the game in the second inning. The Angels have lost four in-a-row.


Mariners Clip Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- John Buck belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning to guide the Mariners to a 7-5 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Stefen Romero hit a three-run homer in the fourth, while Brad Miller and James Jones also batted in runs for Seattle, which has won four straight. Dominic Leone got the win in relief and Fernando Rodney picked up his 15th save. Alex Wood allowed two runs in two innings to fall to 5-6 for the Braves, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Evan Gattis hit a three-run homer and B.J. Upton added a solo shot in defeat.


Alvarez, Marlins Blank Rays

(Miami, FL) -- Henderson Alvarez scattered eight hits in a complete-game shutout as the Marlins downed the Rays 1-0 in Miami. Alvarez improved to 3-and-3 while striking out five as the Marlins won their second straight following a three-game slide. Christian Yelich drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth for the lone run of the ballgame. Chris Archer surrendered the run after pitching seven innings and striking out eight as he fell to 3-3. James Loney and Yunel Escobar each went 2-for-3 for Tampa Bay, which saw its losing streak reach eight.


Twins Beat Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Josh Willingham smacked a three-run homer and Brian Dozier drilled a two-run shot as the Twins beat the Brewers 6-4 at Miller Park. It was Willingham's fourth homer in the last six games. Josmil Pinto plated the other run for Minnesota, which has alternated wins and losses over its last six. Samuel Deduno tossed five innings of two-run ball for the win as he improved to 2-3. Glen Perkins closed it out for his 15th save. Ryan Braun drove in two runs, while Martin Maldonado and Lyle Overbay also knocked in a run each for the Brewers, who had won their previous two. Yovani Gallardo was rocked for all six runs in five frames as he fell to 3-4. The teams now head to Minnesota to complete the four-game home-and-home series.
