Cardinals Clip D'backs In 12th

(St. Louis, MO) -- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, Matt Holliday scored the winning run on a throwing error by rookie Chris Owings as the Cardinals clipped the Diamondbacks 3-2 at Busch Stadium. Jon Jay tied the game at two with his sac-fly RBI in the eighth for the Redbirds, who have won six of their last seven. Allen Craig went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the victory. Michael Wacha left in the seventh inning after being struck by a line drive in the dugout. Seth Maness earned the win. Gerardo Parra hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the eighth for Arizona, which will try to avoid the three-game sweep on Thursday. Trevor Cahill fell to 1-and-6 with the loss.

Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha was diagnosed with an elbow contusion after leaving the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Wacha had pitched six shutout innings before being hit in the elbow by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Matt Adams. It's being reported that he has avoided serious injury could see his next start pushed back.

The Cardinals go for the three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks today at Busch Stadium. St. Louis will send out 5-2 Lance Lynn while Arizona counters with Wade Miley. First pitch will be thrown at 6:15.


Yankees Score Two In 13th, Outlast Cubs

(Chicago, IL) -- John Ryan Murphy capped a two-run 13th inning with an RBI single as the New York Yankees outlasted the Chicago Cubs 4-2 from Wrigley Field.  Preston Claiborne improved to 2-and-0 in relief, as he contributed a key sacrifice bunt in the 13th inning. David Robertson closed the door for his ninth save. Jeff Samardzija remains winless despite seven strong innings of shutout ball. Jose Veras took the loss. Junior Lake collected three hits for Chicago, which had won its previous three games.

The Cubs travel to Petco Park tonight to begin a four-game set with the Padres. Chicago sends out Jake Arrieta to pitch while San Diego counters with 2-4 Eric Stults. First pitch is set to be thrown at 9:10.


Guthrie, Royals Drop White Sox

(Kansas City, MO) -- Jeremy Guthrie threw seven innings of three-hit ball and gave up one run to guide the Royals past the White Sox 3-1 at Kauffman Stadium.  Guthrie took a no-decision, while Wade Davis improved to 3-and-1 and Greg Holland locked up his 13th save. Billy Butler and Danny Valencia drove in a run each for the Royals, who have won three of five. Jose Quintana took the loss after giving up three runs over seven-and-a-third to fall to 2-4. Paul Konerko drove in the lone run for Chicago, which snapped their two-game streak with the loss.

The White Sox are getting their ace back in the rotation. Chris Sale will toe the rubber tonight against the Yankees for his first Major League action in more than a month.  Sale was out with a flexor strain in his elbow. The lefty was 3-0 with a 2.30 earned run average prior to the injury and struck out 11 hitters in four-innings during his lone minor league rehab start.

White Sox closer Matt Lindstrom will need surgery on his left ankle. Manager Robin Ventura stated the righty will be out for an extended period. Lindstrom hurt his ankle fielding a bunt during Monday's contest against the Royals and was diagnosed with a dislocated ankle tendon. The closer will have surgery done tomorrow and holds six saves on the season.

 

Reds Nip Nationals In Rubber Match

(Washington, DC) -- Alfredo Simon tossed seven innings of one-run ball as the Reds nipped the Nationals 2-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series in DC. Simon struck out six as he improved to 6-and-2 with the win. Aroldis Chapman closed it out for his third save. Brandon Phillips and Brayan Pena plated a run each in the fourth inning for Cincinnati, which finished 3-3 on its six-game road trip. Denard Span homered in the first inning for the Nats, who alternated wins and losses during their six-game homestand. Tanner Roark permitted two runs, one earned, in six frames as he fell to 3-2.


Dodgers Edge Mets

(Flushing, NY) -- Yasiel Puig and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning as the Dodgers edged the Mets 4-3 at Citi Field. Adrian Gonzalez also went deep for LA, which will go for the three-game sweep on Thursday. Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out nine over six innings of two-run ball as he improved his mark to 4-2. Kenley Jansen gave up a run in the ninth but held on for his 13th save. Eric Campbell hit his first career home run for the Mets, who have lost three straight and six-of-seven overall. Jacob DeGrom allowed three runs in six frames to suffer the loss and fall to 0-2.


Ozuna Slams Marlins Past Phillies

(Miami, FL) -- Marcell Ozuna launched a grand slam and finished with five RBI as the Marlins rolled the Phillies 14-5 at Marlins Park. Christian Yelich and Garrett Jones tallied two RBI apiece for the Marlins, who snapped a two-game skid. Nathan Eovaldi improved to 3-2 with six innings of three-run ball with only one run earned. Kyle Kendrick fell to 0-5 for the Phils after 5 2/3 innings of work and six runs. Domonic Brown went deep in the loss and drove in two.


Brewers Sink Braves

(Atlanta, GA) -- Mark Reynolds launched a grand slam in the first inning and the Brewers held on for a 6-1 win over the Braves at Turner Field. Carlos Gomez hit a two-run shot in the fourth as a part of his three hit and two-run night. Kyle Lohse helped Milwaukee end a four-game losing streak by dealing eight innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts. Lohse improved to 6-1. Justin Upton stayed red hot with three hits and Atlanta's lone RBI. Ervin Santana took the loss, allowing all six runs in seven innings. The Braves had won their previous three games.


Giants Squash Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Brandon Crawford hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to help the Giants to a 5-1 win over the Rockies at Coors Field. Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval also hit solo jacks for San Fran, which had lost three of four going into Wednesday. Giants starter Matt Cain left after three innings with a strained right hamstring. Yusmeiro Petit improved to 3-and-1 pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Jhoulys Chacin took the loss allowing three runs in just under six innings. DJ LeMahieu scored the Rockies lone run off a fielder's choice.


Balk Sends Tribe To Sweep Of Tigers

(Cleveland, OH) -- Al Albuquerque's bases-loaded balk in the bottom of the 13th allowed Asdrubal Cabrera to score giving the Indians an 11-10 victory and series sweep of the Tigers at Progressive Field. Alex Avila's homer in the top half of the inning had given Detroit a 10-9 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. David Murphy tied the game at nine for the Tribe with a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Tigers closer Joe Nathan. Josh Tomlin picked up the win. He was the Indians' ninth pitcher of the afternoon. Phil Coke was tagged with the loss in his second inning of relief for Detroit.


Choo Homers Rangers Past Mariners

(Arlington, TX) -- Shin-Soo Choo launched a go-ahead solo home run in the fifth inning as the Rangers beat the Mariners 4-3 at Globe Life Park. Choo went 2-for-3 at the dish and shortstop Elvis Andrus added a two-run homer for Texas. Nick Tepesch won his first game of the season, giving up three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Joakim Soria closed it out for his eighth save. Chris Young allowed four runs in 6 1/3 frames to fall to 3-2 with the loss. Robinson Cano hit his second homer of the season and added a double for the M's, who had won their previous two games.


A's Clip Rays Despite One Hit

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Brandon Moss hit a solo homer to help the Athletics sneak by the Rays, 3-2, at Tropicana Field. It was his 10th homer and 40th RBI of the season. Tommy Milone improved to 2-3, giving up two runs across five-and-two-thirds innings. Oakland has won the first two of the three-game set to extend its winning streak to five games. Sean Doolittle locked up his fourth save. James Loney and Yunel Escobar each had two hits and an RBI in the loss. Erik Bedard allowed one earned run in five-and-one-third innings to fall to 2-2. Tampa Bay has lost four in-a-row and five of six.


Angels Edge Astros

(Anaheim, CA) -- Jered Weaver went the distance as the Angels edged the Astros 2-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Angel Stadium. Weaver gave up just one run on two hits and a walk as he improved to 5-3. Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead solo homer in the sixth inning and Erick Aybar drove in a run in the third for the Halos, who have won seven of their last nine. George Springer went deep for Houston, which has lost two in-a-row after a three-game winning streak. Collin McHugh struck out seven over seven innings of two-run ball but fell to 2-3 with the loss.


Pirates Clip Orioles

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Three Pirates players grabbed three hits each as they clawed past the Orioles 9-8 at PNC Park. Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-5 with an RBI in the win while Ike Davis and Starling Marte collected three hits and two RBI each. Wandy Rodriguez lasted just an-inning-and-two-thirds after giving up six runs, one earned, and seven hits in the no-decision. Bryan Morris improved to 4-0 with the win in relief. Chris Tillman was yanked after one inning of work, giving up eight runs, six earned, on six hits. Ryan Webb took the loss and fell to 2-1. Nelson Cruz drove in three and went deep in the loss.


Twins Blank Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- Phil Hughes and two relievers combined on an eight-hit shutout as the Twins blanked the Padres 2-0 to sweep the brief two-game series at Petco Park. Hughes struck out seven while scattering seven hits over seven scoreless innings as he improved to 5-and-1 with the win. Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save. Trevor Plouffe homered and Chris Parmelee plated the other run for Minnesota, which has won five-of-six. Seth Smith had three of the eight hits for the Friars, who have dropped three in-a-row and five of their last seven overall. Tyson Ross fanned eight over seven innings of one-run ball, but fell to 5-4 with the tough-luck loss.
