EHS, T-town Pick Up Two Wins Each

MOUNT CARMEL -- Effingham High School captured a non-conference baseball doubleheader over Mount Carmel Saturday.
In the opener, the lone two runs came in the fifth inning for the Hearts. Kennon Mahaffey led EHS with two singles and an RBI. Preston Walker pitched a one-hitter with no walks and 14 strikeouts.
In the second contest, Effingham blew Mount Carmel away 12-4. The Hearts took a 3-2 third inning lead then tallied four in the fourth and finished out with four in the seventh.
Braydon Bone recorded the win for the Hearts allowing two runs over 3 1/2 innings, with two strikeouts and four walks. Lane Koenig came on to shut down Mount Carmel giving up just one hit, walking two and striking out six during his 2 2/3 innings of work.
Maheffey continued his hot hitting with a single, double and an RBI. Kevin Daugherty tallied two singles and two RBI as did Brennon Poland. Swayde Sanders had a double and two RBI.
"Everybody contributed," said EHS Coach Chris Fleener. "This was truly a team win. The effort was great by all the men who played today."
The Hearts are now 17-11 overall.

At Champaign
Teutopolis picked up two victories Saturday at Champaign to improve to 26-6 on the spring.
In the opening game, Champaign Centennial blanked Decatur MacArthur 10-0 in five innings.
In the second contest, Teutopolis bounced MacArthur 10-0. Louis Niemerg moved his pitching record to 5-3, going the first three innings while John Ungrund came in to pitch the fourth and fifth innings.
Bobby Wenthe had two doubles and an RBI for the Shoes while Reed Hardiek had two singles.
In the third game, T-town edged Champaign Centennial 6-5 scoring three in the first and three in the seventh. Wenthe got the pitching win to improve his record to 4-1. John Ungrund got the save.
Darren Probst had a single, home run and drove in three RBI. Louis Niemerg added two singles and an RBI.
