Anthony Rizzo stroked a two-run single and a solo homer to help the Cubs beat the Cardinals 6-5 in the first of a three-game series at Wrigley Field.
Welington Castillo went 3-for-4 with two RBI for Chicago, which built an early 5-2 lead against Adam Wainwright. Travis Wood pitched seven innings of three-run ball for his second win. Hector Rondon worked the ninth for his second save.
Wainwright allowed all six runs in five innings of work to fall to 5-2 with the loss. Jhonny Peralta went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three RBI for St. Louis, which has lost three of its last four games.
Game time for Game 2 today is 12:05pm. Sunday's game is the ESPN Game of the Week.
