Cardinals Cool Off Brewers Behind Craig, Adams
(St. Louis, MO) -- Allen Craig went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI as the Cardinals beat the Brewers 9-3 at Busch Stadium. Matt Adams added a three-run homer and Jon Jay had three hits and an RBI for St. Louis. Shelby Miller pitched six innings of three-run ball for his third win as the Cards salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Matt Garza gave up five runs in three-plus frames to take the loss before leaving with a contusion on his right thumb. Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer and Carlos Gomez added a solo shot for Milwaukee, which lost for just the second time in 13 road games this season.
The Cardinals announced their 2014 Hall of Fame Class prior to yesterday's game against the Brewers. Willie McGee and Jim Edmonds were named by a fan vote, Marty Marion was selected as the veteran inductee and Mike Shannon was enshrined by the club. Almost 80,000 votes were submitted by the fans over a seven-week time frame.
Cubs Rip Reds
(Cincinnati, OH) -- Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and walked four times to help the Cubs rock the Reds, 9-4, to close out a two-game, rain-shortened series from Great American Ball Park. Nate Schierholtz drove in three, while starter Edwin Jackson evened up his record at two. Chicago has won two of three to move to 9-17. Brayan Pena hit his first long-ball of the season in the loss. Reliever Nick Christiani took the defeat, allowing two runs in two innings. The Reds have lost four of five and sit at 12-15.
Tigers Top White Sox To Sweep Two-Game Set
(Chicago, IL) -- Bryan Holaday's two-run double capped a four-run fourth inning as the Tigers beat the White Sox 5-1 at U.S. Cellular Field. Victor Martinez also drove in two runs for Detroit, which swept the brief two-game series. Max Scherzer struck out seven while pitching six innings of four-hit, shutout ball for his third win. Hector Noesi was tagged for four runs in three-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 0-2 with the loss. Tyler Flowers broke up the shutout with an RBI single in the ninth for Chicago. Dayan Viciedo had two hits and scored the lone White Sox run in the setback.
Marlins Blast Braves, Again
(Miami, FL) -- Marcel Ozuna smacked a three-run homer in the second inning as the Marlins blasted the Braves 9-3 in Miami. Christian Yelich added a two-run homer, while Garrett Jones also drove in two runs for the Fish, who have outscored the Braves 18-3 in the first two games of this three-game set. Nate Eovaldi tossed seven innings of one-run, three-hit ball to improve his mark to 2-1. Justin Upton hit a two-run homer in the ninth for Atlanta, which had won four straight before this series. Aaron Harang was rocked for nine runs in less than five frames as he slipped to 3-and-2.
D'backs Rally Past Rockies
(Phoenix, AZ) -- Miguel Montero clubbed a walk-off solo homer in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Diamondbacks rallied past the Rockies 5-4 to avoid a three-game sweep at Chase Field. Martin Prado went 3-for-4 with a game-tying two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Paul Goldschmidt also went deep for the D'backs, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Addison Reed was credited with his first win. Carlos Gonzalez belted a two-run homer and starting pitcher Jordan Lyles added a solo shot for Colorado, which had won its previous three. Lyles tossed six innings of one-run ball but did not factor in the decision. Tommy Kahnle suffered his first career loss.
Angels Dismiss Indians
(Anaheim, CA) -- Hank Conger hit a two-run home run to help the Angels drop the Indians 7-1 from Anaheim. Mike Trout and David Freese also knocked in two runs each for Los Angeles, which swept the three-game series and is over .500 for the first time this season. C.J. Wilson struck out eight in as many innings of one-run ball for his fourth win. Zach McAllister allowed five runs in four-and-a-third innings for the loss. David Murphy drove in the only run for Cleveland, which has lost six straight.
A's Sweep Rangers In Texas
(Arlington, TX) -- Yoenis Cespedes and Eric Sogard drove in two runs each during a seven-run third inning as the Athletics completed a three-game sweep of the Rangers with a 12-1 rout at Globe Life Park. Sogard plated three runs total, while Coco Crisp hit a solo homer and scored twice for Oakland, which outscored Texas 25-4 in the series. Jesse Chavez struck out eight while giving up just one hit and a walk over seven scoreless innings as he improved to 2-0. Josh Wilson doubled in the lone run for the Rangers, who swept the A's in Oakland last week. Robbie Ross was rocked for 10 runs, six earned, in 3 1/3 frames as he fell to 1-2.
Dodgers Drop Twins For 10K Win
(Minneapolis, MN) -- Zack Greinke struck out six over six-plus innings to help the Dodgers drop the Twins 6-4 and win their 10-thousandth game since joining the National League. Greinke allowed seven hits and an unearned run to move to 5-0. Juan Uribe knocked in two runs for Los Angeles, which has won two of three. Kenley Jansen picked up save number 10. Trevor Plouffe and Eduardo Escobar each drove in two runs for Minnesota, which has lost two of three. Kyle Gibson gave up five runs in 6 2/3 frames for the loss.
Nationals Blank Astros
(Houston, TX) -- Jordan Zimmermann struck out seven over six-and-a-third innings to guide the Nationals to a 7-0 win over the Astros in Houston. Zimmermann allowed seven hits and a walk as he improved to 2-1. Danny Espinosa and Anthony Rendon each hit a home run for Washington, which has won four of five. Rendon ended 4-for-5 with three RBI. Jesus Guzman went 3-for-4 for Houston, which has lost five of seven. Brett Oberholtzer gave up six runs in under five frames for the loss.
